Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The heavy metal aesthetic teams up with wishy-washy New Age mysticism in this reworking of the film It's a Wonderful Life. When Teresa discovers that her boyfriend Bill has dumped her in favor of her best friend, she jumps into her car and takes off into the night. On the road, the girl picks up two strange hitchhikers: the sexy magician Freedom Jack and his dour, chain-smoking companion, Poppy Corn. En route to the Bardos Club, their ultimate destination, Jack and Poppy take turns telling the tale of two star-crossed lovers while Teresa chronicles her failed romance. After a stop-over with the psychic crone Jack calls his mother, Teresa begins to suspect that her unplanned trip has led her into realms not charted on any map. With its lugubrious writing ("His wife had recently left him for a filmmaker of animal documentaries") and predictable storyline--not to mention some achingly bad song lyrics in its first section--this novel is not exactly vintage Pike. Still, the author's loyal fans may well appreciate this particular variety of watered-down spirituality. Also, the novel's life-affirming finale makes for a nice change in a genre that is often relentlessly gory. Ages 12-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars By Far His Best Work, March 3, 2005
This review is from: ROAD TO NOWHERE (Paperback)
I began reading young adult mysteries (Pike, R.L. Stine, Cooney, ect...)and thrillers as a teenager. I am now a highly educated (PhD) 26 year old and I recently began rereading and studying these books. Most of them I don't really care for anymore for a variety of reasons (too predictable, unimaginative, ect...). However, this book represents(along with a few other Pike and Cooney novels) an exception. I appreciate this book more now than I did when I was a kid. I own and have read every Christopher Pike novel ever written. This was by far my favorite! The stories that his characters tell are amazingly detailed and creative. It was almost as if they were based on true events. The book drove me to tears at the end, not necessarily because it was sad, but because at the end I got this eary feeling that you can only get when an ending comes together so well. I highly reccommend this book to anyone adults included!

Teresa is running away from home. From her cheating boyfriend. From her sneaky best friend. While she is driving, she picks up two mysterious hitchhikers, Poppy Corn and Freedom Jack. As they drive along the California coast, they share stories, Teresa, of her terrible relationship, and Poppy Corn and Freedom Jack of a doomed couple they once knew. But as they continue driving, something worse happens, worse than any of their stories....

5.0 out of 5 stars Different to the way the book describes it, but superb., June 28, 2001

This review is from: ROAD TO NOWHERE (Paperback)
I'm a Chris Pike fan...I've read seven or eight of his books, I read this 4th. This is a very good book, don't get me wrong, but it is in no way a childrens book, and in only a very small way does it relate to the description given on the back cover. The back cover describes a girl running away and being taken away by death. The story is actually about a teenage girl who runs away from home because her boyfriend cheated on her and made love to her best friend (which is graphically described in the book). The book is in no way scary, or a childrens book. I'd certify it a late-teens drama book. It also contains many cusses and a little violence. It really is an excellent drama book, and I'm only 13 but its not suitable for me, and its in no way a scary story, like any of pikes books, but I really enjoyed reading it. Along with this book I recommend "The Last Vampire" and "Final Friends" by CPike.
