This review is from: THE ROBERTvon HIRSCH COLLECTION Volume One: Old Master Drawings, Paintings and Medieval Miniatures (Hardcover)
Robert von Hirsch was originally German; being Jewish he moved to Switzerland prior to World War 2. Having made his fortune in the leather business, he proceeded to amass a fabulous art collection. He died aged 94 in 1977.
How times and values change. When von Hirsch's collection was auctioned in 1978, Time Magazine described the $35 million (approximate) proceeds from "The Sale of the Century" as "stupendous". At that time this was the greatest amount of money realised from the sale of a single art collection. The von Hirsh collection was chock full of distinguished paintings and drawings, medieval art, furniture, manuscripts, textiles etc. Of course $35 million today would have significantly less purchasing power, but it gives an indication of how art prices have exploded in the intervening 30 years. Today, the world record price for a SINGLE work of art is around $150 million!
The catalogues (4 slim and small sized hard backed volumes) are certainly modest by today's much more extravagant standards. Some of the illustrations are in color but the majority are in monotone. They are of reasonable quality. The price estimates, one of the most interesting aspects of the publication, are included.
This book would be of interest to collectors and as an historical document.
