Last summer my wife and three young children spent six weeks in Grand Lake, Colorado while I stayed at home and worked. While they were there they spent many days on hikes wandering around meadows looking at wildlife and wildflowers. One weekend I brought this book to them, and they spent their time outdoors looking up and identifying flowers in this book.

The book is organized by flower color, so searching is a breeze. In the end, this book brought a good deal of education to the kids' outdoor exploration.

With a daughter at college away out west in the Rockies, we ordered this book for when we visit from the east coast. It is a slim packable guide that is as simple and enjoyable for adults as it is for kids. It is organized by color... a section on yellow flowers, a section of white flowers, etc. using their common names with pictures and descriptions. At the end of each colored section there is a page to record where you have seen or discovered the flowers for that section. So, if you are taking a group of children on a hike, each child may want his own copy to record his discoveries. There are also 2 different flowers (of same color)per page so a child could compare/contrast the flowers by shape, petals, etc while on a discovery hike. References at the end are also given for further study. Nice book for fieldtrips or nature studies!
