Editorial Reviews

Controversial, out-spoken, brashthose are just three words that describe the man known worldwide as CM Punk, and during his tenure in Ring of Honor, he more than lived up to those labels. He also established himself as one of the finest professional wrestlers in the world today with historic bouts against the likes of Samoa Joe, Homicide, Bryan Danielson, & Christopher Daniels, and will forever be considered a legend in ROH. But for three months in the summer of 2005, Punk shocked Ring of Honor fans & officials alike and it all began one night in June when ROH gathered to bid farewell to one of their own as Punk challenged for the ROH World Title one final time. What happened that evening kicked off three months of chaos as Punk took the World Title hostage and left ROH scrambling to find the man that would dethrone him. Be it Roderick Strong, Samoa Joe, or Christopher Daniels, they each faced off with Punk in hopes of reclaiming the title for Ring of Honor. They were three of the most exciting, unpredictable, chaotic months in ROHs history, and they have since come to be known as The Summer of Punk Disc 1 1. It's no secret that it was when C.M. Punk decided to speak his mind only to win the WWE Championship weeks later the night his contract expired that he "broke the glass" ceiling & became one of the most popular stars in current day WWE. However this isn't the first time this type of incident has happened in Punk's career as it was back in 2005 before he came to WWE, C.M. Punk made it clear that he was leaving Ring Of Honor wrestling but won the ROH Championship on what would be his last night in the company to a hero's reaction...only for him to completely drop a "pipe bomb" in that he was leaving ROH & taking the title hostage with him. That kicked off what would be remembered as "The Summer Of Punk" where many challengers would attempt to take the championship in a "must win" situation from Punk as he kept teasing how each match would be his last in the company. This DVD set showcases all of his matches in during this period along with his various promos including his confrontations with Mick Foley and when he signed his WWE contract on top of the ROH Championship.

vs. ROH Champion Austin Aries - This was setup to be Punk's final match in ROH going for the World Championship that he's never held. Aries came into this match with a bad neck & Punk targeted it heavily with forearms, nerve holds, spinning neckbreaker & a tight gripped headlock to the point where he pulled Aries over the top rope from the apron down to the ground with a headlock. Aries made attempts to mat wrestle Punk himself while also working on his neck with a Death Valley Driver on the apron & suplex that landed Punk right on his neck before throwing Punk into the corner so many times that the turnbuckle padding came off.

Ring of Honor has released some great CM Punk sets. The Second City Saint and Icon are must own if you are a Punk fan. The Summer of Punk is the third in an ROH trilogy, if you will, and chronicles his exit from the company back in 2005. Most who are unfamiliar with the events on this set will likely compare it to what happened in WWE during summer 2011. It is similar but his departure here was much more drawn out with a lot of false last matches. Each of those matches are showcased on this set as well as the actual final match. Since those matches are not many (six all together), the rest of this compilation is filled with promos by Punk. These promos are the best part of this set. We all know Punk excels on the microphone, but the promos here are on another level. The way he articulates and delivers the promo after his match with Austin Aries is phenomenal. These promos are worth your time and no, a member of the "writing team" did not write this for him, they are promos done old school style.

Unfortunately, the matches are not as great as the promos. The Austin Aries match is the best with back and forth non-stop wrestling, the match had great energy as well. The Colt Cabana match was second best just because of the emotion of that final night. The rest of the matches are not bad, but they are nothing exceptional either. The matches on the Second City Saint and Icon DVDs were all good for the most part. I was also hoping for good matches here but was disappointed to find only two. Again, the strength of this set is in the promos. They are highly entertaining and you will be glued to your TV when Punk speaks (Makes me miss having Punk around in the pro wrestling industry, best wishes to him in MMA). If you are thinking about purchasing this DVD set, be ready for awesome promos but average matches.

This is CM Punk at his best with no WWE imposed limitations. Great matches and great interviews from one of the most chaotic times in ROH. If you're a Punk fan, this is a must have. It goes great right next to my Best in the World blu-ray.
