From the Author

Alfred James Phillips spent years honing his story telling skills as an information author and marketer, a radio personality and an investment advisor, talents that helped during the incubation phase of this fictional story as it developed over the years. Phillips lived in the South during the '50s and '60s, and saw the consequence of bigotry and prejudice. But he also witnessed another side of that story. A story seldom told about the many white families that were saddened and outraged by those vicious acts of hate. The Lord spoke to his spirit to tell another story one day, a story of hope and love. And now after years of incubation that fictional story is ready to be told. `ROSES' is the first episode about one family's struggle to show a better way, while hoping to heal men's hearts.

Again he found her door part-way open. However this time he found her sitting up in bed and grinning from ear to ear.

Â"Well donÂ’t you look happy this morning, howÂ’s my best girl doing?Â" he offered as he walked over to greet her with a kiss.

Â"Guess what Darling?Â" Eunice replied as she grabbed his hand while giggling like a child. Â"Doctor Morrison was in a little while ago and, guess what,Â" she asked again.

Â"Eunice, youÂ’re playing my game, IÂ’m the guy that plays the guessing game,Â" he laughed. Â"I donÂ’t know what?Â"

Â"He said he talked with Doctor Hamilton and they agreed that I could probably go home in a day or two. IsnÂ’t that wonderful?Â" she said as she squeezed his hand a little tighter.

Â"Did he really? ThatÂ’s great, thatÂ’s just great. I canÂ’t wait to have you come home. I miss you so much,Â" John said as he bent down, placing his hand gently on her cheek, and bringing her face up to his, he kissed her again. Â"Boy will Mom be surprised when I tell her. She didnÂ’t come this morning, I think she was feeling a little under the weather, said she had laundry and other things to do. She probably didnÂ’t want to admit that she was a little tired after all this running back and forthÂ… So the Doc said you were doing well enough to go home in a few days, did he?Â"

Â"Yes he did and I canÂ’t wait.Â"

The smile had left her face and he knew that there was something else that was troubling her. Â"Alright, what else did he say? Why are you looking so sad? Please Sweetheart, tell me,Â" he asked as he sat on the side of the bed and placed her hand in his.

As the tears began to flow, she blurted out, Â"Oh Honey, he said it was very likely that I could never have another baby.Â"

Â"So he told you.Â"

Sobbing even harder now, she began again, Â"yes...but you already knew...he told you? Why didnÂ’t you tell me?Â"

Â"Sweetheart, I didnÂ’t want to upset you, and besides, what do they know,Â" he blurted out without thinking, trying to ease the hurt that she was feeling.

Â"Yeah, what do they know,Â" she repeated as she blew her nose and picking up another tissue she pressed it to her eyes. Â"Besides, it canÂ’t be true, not after what I saw and heard. They told me...Â" she stopped without continuing and that beautiful smile of hers returned to a face that now was radiant.

Â"Told you? Who told you what?Â" Puzzled, John asked. Â"What are you talking about?Â" WhatÂ’s going on here? He thought as he saw the complete change in her demeanor in just a matter of minutes. Was this what the doctors were watching for? Please God donÂ’t let her be ill, was his silent prayer.

Â"Honey, I wanted to tell you, but then yesterday when I tried, you brushed it aside and said weÂ’d talk about it another day.Â"

Â"When yesterday, you didnÂ’t tell me you had another visitor?Â" He was really confused now, Â"Who was here, another doctor?Â" John was no longer sitting on the side of the bed as he nervously walked over to the window.

Â"No, thatÂ’s not it. ThatÂ’s not what I mean. Please Honey, come back and sit beside me,Â" she pleaded. Â"I have something I want to tell you.Â"

Not wanting to upset her any more than she seemed to be, he sat back down beside her and tried to change the subject. Â"This bed feels kind of hard, have you been sleeping alright?Â"

Â"Hush, my Darling, I want to tell you something. ItÂ’s important. John, you know I love you very much, I always have. And I know you love me. ItÂ’s just that I donÂ’t know how to tell you.Â"

Â"Tell me what?Â" he interrupted.

Â"Please, let me talk. I donÂ’t want you to ever stop loving me. And I donÂ’t want what IÂ’m about to tell you, make you love me any less.Â"

As he started to respond, she placed a finger to his lips and continued. Â"IÂ’m not sick, and IÂ’m not ill, and today I am just as aware of my life and the things in it as I was before I came to this hospital. But something has changed in my life and I hope you will try to understand. Something so wonderful, I donÂ’t know if I even understand it. John Darling, I hope you donÂ’t think IÂ’m crazy but we are going to have a child. I know that we will! Most folks would think IÂ’m crazy so I canÂ’t tell anybody about this, but I need to tell you,Â" she continued as she held onto his hand. Â"Honey, I donÂ’t know if it was a dream or a vision or what. All I know...it was real. Please donÂ’t say anything until I finish. I want to tell you what happened as best as I can remember.Â"

John was becoming uneasy now, but he decided that it would be best to be still, as she had asked, and listen to her story. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

Illinois was Alfred's place of birth. His mother, Martha, was of German descent and his father, William, immigrated to this great land of opportunity from England. Alfred and his one sister and four brothers were born during or shortly after the 'great depression'. They had little financial wealth, but they experienced the richness of a loving family. That is until the untimely death of his father.

Alfred soon learned that disappointment and failure in one's life can teach and strengthen, even though at the time one often fails to see the value. Because his father was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, the two youngest children still living at home, Alfred and his brother, were sent to live in a group home at Mooseheart. Spending three years in what one could call an orphanage, was an excellent experience for Alfred. He believes that it made him stronger and more compassionate toward parentless children and the people who take care of them. He also believes this has given him some insight when sharing this heartwarming adventure of love and faith.

After graduating from Olivet, in Michigan, Alfred enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was trained as a Hospital Laboratory Technician and then stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. After his service years, Alfred spent years honing his story telling skills as an information author and marketer in the medical, insurance, investment and hobby fields. He also became a radio personality and tournament bass fisherman. These experiences combined to improve his creative talents as the story developed. And now after years of incubation the story of the 'Roses' is ready to be told.

It has been a long time since I have read a novel. I was absolutely and totally captivated from cover to cover. Just when you think you have figured out what will happen next, you are pleasantly surprised. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Thumbs up for a job very well done.

First off, I am a big reader of all kinds of books. This book had me on the 2nd page. I started reading it at 4:30 am and 5 hours later I was done! I couldn't put it down. I was born in the south in 1963 so I heard all the stories from my Mother. The book just sucked me right into the story... like I was there! Can not wait for the next book!

I enjoyed this book very much. It is well written and the subject matter makes it so much mure than "just another novel"! No matter where you grew up, you will find yourself immersed in the struggles and joys of a family committed to each other through difficult times in our nation. After you have read both books in this series, you will be looking forward to the third.
