Again he found her door part-way open. However this time he found her sitting up in bed and grinning from ear to ear.
Â"Well donÂt you look happy this morning, howÂs my best girl doing?Â" he offered as he walked over to greet her with a kiss.
Â"Guess what Darling?Â" Eunice replied as she grabbed his hand while giggling like a child. Â"Doctor Morrison was in a little while ago and, guess what,Â" she asked again.
Â"Eunice, youÂre playing my game, IÂm the guy that plays the guessing game,Â" he laughed. Â"I donÂt know what?Â"
Â"He said he talked with Doctor Hamilton and they agreed that I could probably go home in a day or two. IsnÂt that wonderful?Â" she said as she squeezed his hand a little tighter.
Â"Did he really? ThatÂs great, thatÂs just great. I canÂt wait to have you come home. I miss you so much,Â" John said as he bent down, placing his hand gently on her cheek, and bringing her face up to his, he kissed her again. Â"Boy will Mom be surprised when I tell her. She didnÂt come this morning, I think she was feeling a little under the weather, said she had laundry and other things to do. She probably didnÂt want to admit that she was a little tired after all this running back and forth So the Doc said you were doing well enough to go home in a few days, did he?Â"
Â"Yes he did and I canÂt wait.Â"
The smile had left her face and he knew that there was something else that was troubling her. Â"Alright, what else did he say? Why are you looking so sad? Please Sweetheart, tell me,Â" he asked as he sat on the side of the bed and placed her hand in his.
As the tears began to flow, she blurted out, Â"Oh Honey, he said it was very likely that I could never have another baby.Â"
Â"So he told you.Â"
Sobbing even harder now, she began again, Â"yes...but you already knew...he told you? Why didnÂt you tell me?Â"
Â"Sweetheart, I didnÂt want to upset you, and besides, what do they know,Â" he blurted out without thinking, trying to ease the hurt that she was feeling.
Â"Yeah, what do they know,Â" she repeated as she blew her nose and picking up another tissue she pressed it to her eyes. Â"Besides, it canÂt be true, not after what I saw and heard. They told me...Â" she stopped without continuing and that beautiful smile of hers returned to a face that now was radiant.
Â"Told you? Who told you what?Â" Puzzled, John asked. Â"What are you talking about?Â" WhatÂs going on here? He thought as he saw the complete change in her demeanor in just a matter of minutes. Was this what the doctors were watching for? Please God donÂt let her be ill, was his silent prayer.
Â"Honey, I wanted to tell you, but then yesterday when I tried, you brushed it aside and said weÂd talk about it another day.Â"
Â"When yesterday, you didnÂt tell me you had another visitor?Â" He was really confused now, Â"Who was here, another doctor?Â" John was no longer sitting on the side of the bed as he nervously walked over to the window.
Â"No, thatÂs not it. ThatÂs not what I mean. Please Honey, come back and sit beside me,Â" she pleaded. Â"I have something I want to tell you.Â"
Not wanting to upset her any more than she seemed to be, he sat back down beside her and tried to change the subject. Â"This bed feels kind of hard, have you been sleeping alright?Â"
Â"Hush, my Darling, I want to tell you something. ItÂs important. John, you know I love you very much, I always have. And I know you love me. ItÂs just that I donÂt know how to tell you.Â"
Â"Tell me what?Â" he interrupted.
Â"Please, let me talk. I donÂt want you to ever stop loving me. And I donÂt want what IÂm about to tell you, make you love me any less.Â"
As he started to respond, she placed a finger to his lips and continued. Â"IÂm not sick, and IÂm not ill, and today I am just as aware of my life and the things in it as I was before I came to this hospital. But something has changed in my life and I hope you will try to understand. Something so wonderful, I donÂt know if I even understand it. John Darling, I hope you donÂt think IÂm crazy but we are going to have a child. I know that we will! Most folks would think IÂm crazy so I canÂt tell anybody about this, but I need to tell you,Â" she continued as she held onto his hand. Â"Honey, I donÂt know if it was a dream or a vision or what. All I know...it was real. Please donÂt say anything until I finish. I want to tell you what happened as best as I can remember.Â"
John was becoming uneasy now, but he decided that it would be best to be still, as she had asked, and listen to her story. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
