3.0 out of 5 stars Good content, but littered with errors. August 11, 2010
By E R
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
There is a lot of great info in this book. However, so far I've only seriously studied up to Ch 5 and I've seen a lot of typos, many of which affect the understanding you might gain from reading that certain section. Myself and a co-worker have come across multiple mislabeled diagrams and examples, and contradicting statements. It can be quite frustrating to study with this book. The last thing I came across that prompted me to finally write this review was a "Do I know this already?" quiz question that blatantly tells you to choose two answers on a multiple choice, only to flip to the back of the book to the answers section and find only one option as the answer! I actually think its not referring to the same question! These are small things, but they add up, and are very annoying. I have found many more errors in this book, but I won't go into them all. The errors I have found so far only make me wonder how many I didn't notice, or didn't know enough about to know that they were wrong, which could potentially be a lot since I'm trying to learn a good portion of this material for the first time! I am convinced that this book might have been briefly reviewed, but not very well, technically speaking, and not to the detail level I would expect from a "Certification Guide" published by the company issuing the certification.

In closing, I think this book has a lot of great information in it, and Wendell Odom does a great job of explaining things. I just wish it wasn't littered with errors, and that is why I only give it 3 stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Errors? September 24, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I am wondering why it is that so very many of the books in this series (Cisco) have so many errors. Is it that they are in a rush to push the product, or is it just too expensive to fix them? I have spent hours now in triple checking my work because the results don't agree with what a given book says. I really don't think there is an excuse for this, particularly and especially for technical books that demand extraordinary accuracy. Would you tell your manager that "Oh, that's not my answer - I must have made a typo in my report" and not expect some consequences?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource to Learn - But You Will Need Labs June 22, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a great book. However, you really need to have a great understanding of CCNA concepts first. It assumes you've pretty much mastered all facets of the CCNA. Also, you will need to find your own labs and do a million of them. If you're planning on taking the exam after just reading this book you're probably going to fail.

There are several parts of the book that are overly wordy. I didn't want to skip ahead because I didn't want to miss anything. However, there were parts where I would read 10 pages of info and think to myself, "That should have only taken 1/2 page to explain."

Overall, it's got all of the information you need.

I'm Kent Brockman, and that's my two cents...

Go to the Cisco Press website for the book CCNP ROUTE 642-902 Official Certification Guide (Exam Certification Guide)under "more information" there is an "update". An errata, if you will. Download this for your book purchase. You'll need it!

There are more than "90 corrections" listed, in the update. Of course, you will need to locate and edit these within the book. 1 maybe 2 hours (took me over an hour) to correct on your own.

They (Cisco Press) should replace my 1st edition book with a one that has these corrections within.................for free!

This will not stop me from completing my mission to pass the test.

However, time is the most valuable thing a person has. Everything else can be healed, bought again, etc. Time is UN-RENEWABLE. AND IT DOES COST ME MONEY TO LENGTHEN THIS PROCESS BY MAKING SURE THE BOOK I BOUGHT IS "MOSTLY CORRECT"

SO, let me tell you how I really feel....LOL

Piece !

One of the problems with Kindle editions is that they don't update the content to reflect the errata. Technical books are often filled with errors and typos when they first come out.
That's why I stopped buying technical books in the Kindle store.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle Edition Buyer Beware March 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I like the convenience of using my Kindle and Kindle e-books for study so given I'm preparing for the CCNP ROUTE test I was considering adding the ROUTE - Official Certification Guide Kindle edition to my collection.

However, as noted by others there are numerous errors in the text.

To be specific a trip to the Cisco Press site reveals that by the 1st Ed - 5th. printing the errata doc available there is now spilling onto the 9th page.

Given there is no way that I'm aware of to edit a Kindle book that isn't your own there's no way to apply the errata to the Kindle edition assuming one would want to.

It would seem that Cisco Press needs to get someone on staff to update the Kindle edition to the 5th. printing level correction and make that available.

2.0 out of 5 stars The thruth about this book... January 17, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read this book over and over...

The good thing is that the author try to put EVERYTHING about CCNP routing in this book..
The bad thing is that this topic is SO HUGE and the ideas were not presented in an easily and organized way that after a few pages you have no idea what are you studying about...

When you are in the middle of the books , you got so many links to so many places that you forgot what you were studying about.
They are missing a lot of labs as well, and when is presented it wasn't in a clear way.In other words, we should follow the process of other people labs, when they were explaining step by step in an easy way why he was doing this and that.
This book was made for people with a VERY good understanding of CCNA, or in other words, got a very fresh memory of CCNA concepts..

As a self study guide is TOUGH to study from there..So, after a while and realizing how hard it was , specialty with a topic so wide and confusing as CCNP Route.

Please remember that CCNP and specially CCNP Route is on the threshold of CCIE ( the most difficult certification on earth in any professional field..) So, to study from there ain't gonna be a walk in the cloud..

So, to understand the concepts and see how the different protocols really work, I used :
-CCNP route CBT Nuggets Videos;for a guide and explanation
- I used "cisco CCNP routing and switching Quick reference" book;to do labs ,
- I used other books; to understand everything properly in an organized way
- I used the internet;
- and if there is a VERY specific topic to consult..I do a research in this book..As my last resort when I am absolutely clueless about certain topic..
