Switching your cat to a renal diet can be very difficult. The renal foods have low salt and low phosphorous to help control the electrolyte imbalances that are common with chronic renal failure/insufficiency. This makes the food a lot less palatable than your standard cat food. Some cats will eat any type of renal food and others won't take to it at all, regardless of the brand.

The prices of renal foods are much more expensive than your standard food too. I like that I can get Royal Canin Renal here on Amazon without having to go to vet to pick up each bag.

I highly recommend trying this brand first but if your cat doesn't take to it, here are others you can consider:

Royal Canin Renal Canned
Hill's Prescription Diet Feline k/d (dry & canned)
Hi-Tor Canned Neo-Diet Feline Canned Kidney Diet
Iams Veterinary Formulas Renal Multi-Stage Renal (dry & canned)
Purina NF Kidney Function (dry & canned)
Medi-Cal Feline Reduced Protein -- This one is specially formulated for cats with advanced kidney disease, chronic liver disease and heart failure.

Thanks for taking the time to read my review, and I hope you found it helpful in making a purchase decision.

My 18 year old cat is in the early stages of renal failure and didn't like the canned renal diets provided by our vet. This dry food does the trick. He eats it daily. I mix it with the Royal Canin canned for variety.

He loves this food. That's the most important thing. He is so much healthier since he started eating this. Nothing too good for my old boy.

Just had to start my kitty on a renal diet. Was afraid he would turn his nose up, but he LOVES this food!! Loves the canned version as well. I don't order it from Amazon. As of January 16, 2015, a 7 lb bag is almost $68 on Amazon (56.46 + 10.97 shipping). Just bought it very easily at Banfield Animal Hospital (PetSmart) for $38.95...nearly half the price for same size! Just checked PetSmart's price....$35.49 with free shipping. I am a loyal Amazon customer & am used to Amazon having competitive prices. Sadly, they are gouging us when it comes to this product. Why Amazon?

I am very pleased to have found a food that my CKD cat likes. And, the fact that it also good for his teeth is a very nice extra. I even put some of the bits on top of his moist food, but it does not really help much. I do not understand why manufacturers of prescription diet moist cat food cannot make food that tastes good to a cat. And, even some of the prescription diet moist food has products in it that are not good for a CKD cat.

I've adoptioned a senior 14 year old female cat. Her most recent blood work revealed that she has to be on special Kidney food. After a discussion with the vet ,she recommended the Royal Canine as being the best quality of the assortment for this medical issue. Luckily she loves this as well as the moist food in this product line.

It was a little more pricey than from my vet's, but it saved me the time to go and pick it up. It came in a timely manner.

My cat is on this food per the vet's recommendation. I don't get the impression that it's the tastiest food there is, but he scarfs it down, so he does like it. Most importantly, the renal balance in the food is really good for him, and keeps his kidneys going. My cat is 18, and I'm glad that there is a food to keep him happy and healthy!
