5.0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Learn How to Create Games
RPG Maker 2 for the PS2 brings 3D adventure creation to the consoles. A great improvement over RPG Maker, the depth of games you can create with this is staggering.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Game!
Words cannot express how horrible this game is. The original RPG Maker for Playstation was fun and a great game. This game is so horrendously bad.

First, time consumption wasn't that big of a deal in the original RPG Maker. It was simple to learn and you could make RPG's in no time. This game has you doing as much work as possible. They have made it so instead of being...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Learn How to Create Games, November 16, 2003
This review is from: RPG Maker II (Video Game)
RPG Maker 2 for the PS2 brings 3D adventure creation to the consoles. A great improvement over RPG Maker, the depth of games you can create with this is staggering.

First, if you haven't tried RPG Maker, the original, that is a simple 2-D adventure maker that could make games such as Final Fantasy 1 and 2. You had little 'wizards' and 'warriors' and such moving up, down, left and right through towns, dungeons, castles and forests. You could have simple dialogue, music and events. This might be a good starting system for someone very new to game creation, to help them learn in a very simple manner.

RPG Maker 2 launches into full 3 dimensional adventures, so you have to be able to think more seriously about the layout of your games. Instead of just having a "flat world" that you move through, you literally take blocks and create a 3D world, with stairs up to higher levels, hidden rooms, and much more. You can change the texture of every block, making giant cathedrals, small village huts, wooden bridges, and just about anything you can imagine.

You can connect a USB keyboard to type in long descriptions, and your choices of graphics, sounds and events are much more intense. As you might imagine, you can therefore take MONTHS and months to create huge adventure worlds. The tools are all there, but it takes a little while to get used to how they work, as with any new design system.

When your game is done, save it onto a memory card and trade it off to friends. This could be the perfect way to learn about game design and create something that others are willing to pay to play!

Highly recommended for aspiring game designers who are good with logic and complex design. I'd still recommend the original RPG Maker for younger kids who need to learn the 2D basics first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty complex but it'll be worth it in the end, May 23, 2004

I've spent a lot of time planning a game that I'd love to make. Finally, I found PRG Maker 2 and it's able to make it real. Those of you who complain about it need to forget and move on then. THIS GAME IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. Remember that. Obviously the game has many restrictions, because the company can't make a game that good. If you have MUCH patience and a very creative mind, then get this game! I've had it for a few months and I'm still not far at all, and I realize that it'll be an extrememly long time before I am, but it'll be great when I finally am!! (By the way, if you do plan on getting it, it is absolutly necessary that you get some sort of UBS keyboard. This makes it sooo much easier to type rather than pressing the D-Pad a million times just get someone to say a simple message. These keyboards can be found here -where I got mine- for as little as $15! Get one if you get RPG Maker 2.)

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a GAME DEVELOPMENT TOOL. NOT A GAME., November 26, 2004
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: RPG Maker II (Video Game)
There seems to be A LOT of confusion as to what RPG Maker 2 is. Here's what it's not: It's not a game. You can't simply put the disc in your PS2 and start playing some magical adventure. It is in fact a Game development tool. Ya know? For making games. Then you can play them.
That being said, it's a VERY fun program to use. If you understand what RPG Maker 2 does, then by all means, you should try it. At least then you will find out with a minimal amount of investment if game development is for you or not. :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good game, December 27, 2003

If you've ever played the first RPG Maker, then you know what an improvement this one is. If you haven't, here's the rundown. You're given what is essentially a blank canvas and all the tools you need to create your own RPG adventure.

To say the least, this is an awesome concept. I mean, who hasn't wanted to make their own games? It's a bit hard to go through, but thankfully, there's an in-game help to guide you through all the tools and commands.

The graphics aren't exactly awe-inspiring, especially for a PS2 game. The games you make will end up looking pretty much like a first-generation PSone. Still, while a bit of a disappointment, it didn't bother me too much. It's kinda funny because the graphics of the first game looked like a first-gen Super Nintendo game.

You can fully customize everything--from the items, to the characters appearance, even to the spell/magic graphics. The game is compatible with the PS2 Keyboard, which is a tremendous help. Playing the game without one is extremely frustrating as you have to input each character with the controller, slowing the game considerably. It's also virtually impossible to write any of the scripts without one.

While you DO have to invest quite a few hours to create a game of any quality, it's really no different from the time you would spend playing an RPG like Final Fantasy. This game is especially good if you plan to be a software programmer someday. Ok, maybe not.

I would recommend this game to anyone who doesn't get bored easily. It's very rewarding to make a game and then share it with your friends (if you have any after spending all your free time on this game!).

Once I heard this game was coming out, I had to get it (as others said). I was hoping this game would be a little easier, but it is definetly a challenge. I bought it in the summer and therefore had a good amount of time to play it. However if you can not donate 2-5 hours a day, this games not for you. I now do not have nearly enough time to create an RPG, and therfore havent touched this game in months. This game is also VERY VERY challenging, Not many have mentioned how hard it is, but it takes a lot of thought. Good luck with this one.

Alright, first of all, I would like to say I am a fan of making RPGs and I have quite a bit of expirence when it comes to making them. So dont just think im some random guy talking here about nothing. What I saw in this game that realy attracted me to it was a couple things.
1. the whole 3-D idea of it is sure genious! So the graphics arn't what you see from the PS2 or X-Box, big deal! If you want to find something better, go right ahead and spend over $300!
2. I realy enjoyed the idea of the USB keyboard. For the computer RPG makers, this is just another yippidie da, but for the PS2 this is a real acomplishment when you have to type in endless text...
3.somehow, somewhere, I just feel like complementing on the object creator. it is pretty primitive but for your simple objects and buildings this gets the job done well enough. they have many diffrent types of textures and props to help create.
4.The spellmaker is Great! I love working with this tool. It is a lot of fun creating explosions and attacks for the enemy or yourself. And the graphics are not half-bad themselves in the battles. This was one that I realy gave a thumbs up!
5.One very intresting feature is that you can upload photos from your digital camera and put them in your game. This is a very nifty little tool that is nice to have if you have a good digital camera.

So, this is why I think that this game diserves 6 stars(I can only put 5!) and I would recommend this game to anyone seeking a good RPG maker for there spare time or much devoted time to work on. I encourage this product to maybe even get a couple ways for expansion packs if that could be possible in the future when the PS2 gets better. So then more characters and monsters could be put in the game...So, anyways...yep. this is a good game. BUY IT! AND HAVE FUN!

RPGM 2 is a one of a kind product for PS2. It gives you so much control over what your game is like... Designing the dungeons is only the beginning. Custom spell effects and battle systems are possible - you can write scripts for nearly every aspect of the game. More than 100 character models can be used for your party members, and you can edit the color, size, and transparency of each of them. There are tons of bad guys too, and they're just as customizeable.
The graphics are lackluster, but that's because the developers spent all their energy making the game as powerful and enjoyable as possible. The sound is actually really good with 68 different tunes you can put anywhere in your game.
The sample game, Fu-ma, is decently long and plays a lot like Dragon Warrior. The fact that you can play other people's games means you'll get lots of playtime with this product, even after you're done creating your own game... Buy it, I say!

5.0 out of 5 stars RPG Maker 1 in 3D, February 5, 2004
This review is from: RPG Maker II (Video Game)
Since few have grasped the depths of this game, I am going to write a more in-depth review.

One person said that rpgs should always use side battle systems(ie: FF7, ChronoCross, etc.) and he doesn't realize that it is possible to go beyond the sample game battles. You can fully customize the battles. Everything in the battles can be your own doing. You can completely change everything about the battles. You can even make your own system of "side-battling". It takes some practice with scripts and events, but you can do it.

You can do whatever you want, though it is funner creating your own way of doing things. I personally don't like the battles in the sample game so I am going to make my own battle system. You can completely customize everything down to button arrangements. You could set it up so buttons do certain tasks. Basically the whole game can be customized to the way you like, and that is what RPG Maker 2 is about.

RPG Maker 1 limited you to their way of doing things. You could only have their battles or use their configurations. This game lets you change that completely.

It does take practice and some time. You should look up some faqs in the internet. gamefaqs works. Find a helpful guide that will teach you how to do things and you can get started from there.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's great, but..., January 22, 2004

This title is awesome, but there are a few downsides to it.
Unless you have a lot of free time on your hands, I don't recommend this game to you. It takes an excruciating amount of time to make 10 minutes for your game. True, it is fun making it however you want, but you do have restrictions.
1. You can only have a party in the game. You can't go solo or have a behind camera view. It's always 3 people following you around and an arial view.
2. You have a certain amount of things you can put in worlds or dungeons. You can't have huge, free-roaming places.
3. You have a certain limit of space in the over-all game.
4. The graphics aren't very good. The bad guys don't look that bad, but the characters and main characters in your game are almost box shaped.
5. You can't have a hack 'n' slash game. Bummer. You can't put a bad guy in the room and have your characters attack it. It's alot like Pokemon on Gameboy... You're walking around when all of a sudden, the music gets scary, the screen goes black, and you're there, facing the enemy. And you can't even see yourself! All you see is what's in front of you. First person.

All in all, the game is absolutly great. Sure, there are downsides to it, but if you don't care about having great graphics or how your character goes through the game, then this game is even better for you!

I have been playing the import version of this game for quite awhile now and it is great! This game is vastly improved from the previous version with newer graphics, terrain features and now lets you build in 3-D. The game includes a beginners, intermediate and advanced mode that helps those new to the series ease into the games mechanics. You are virtually only limited to what your mind (and how much time you wish to put into your games)can create. You can create your own town's, storylines, which are made easier to input with a PS2 USB Keyboard, spells, maps, treasures and battles. Once you are done creating a game you can share them with friends who have a copy of the game by trading memory cards with them. Games can easily take over 40 hours to create (I have been working on mine for over 3 months now) and even longer depending on just how deep and involving you wish to make your game. It's a great game and I already have my English version pre-ordered. It's a no brainer for those who enjoy rpg's. Here is your chance to show the world just how creative you can be!
