5.0 out of 5 stars works in both Windows & linux
A lot of reviews say it doesn't work in windows when they install the software from the cd... i actually lost my cd and was only using this with linux at first. To get it working on windows, i found driver online (search:"CH341SER.ZIP" in google) and it worked perfectly. If anyone here needs a driver for it email me at blu30n3@gmail.com.

3.0 out of 5 stars dont buy it
The product looks good but does not have a driver for XP on the mini-cd that came with it. I have not found a driver for it yet and am still looking. IF you run XP don't buy it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Could not make it work with Windows Vista, April 19, 2010

Installing this device to Windows Vista caused the dreaded blue screen of death every time I plugged it into a USB port. The drivers loaded to the computer without any errors, but as soon I plugged in the cord and the USB manager "sensed" the device, it would trigger an IRQ conflict resulting in a stack dump.

I ended up tossing it in the trash.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work, don't buy this, June 25, 2010

This adapter cable does not work with Windows XP, Vista or 7. I have spent 8 hours trying to make it work, installing different drivers, etc.
I would like to return the adapter, but return shipping costs more than the adapter did. I have been cheated out of my money and 8 hours of time.
I am surprised that Amazon allows vendors to sell faulty merchandise. I guess the almighty dollar speaks louder than these reviews. It would be nice to be credited for our troubles.

Fine if you are using a 10-15 year old computer but not valid for a modern machine as it does not have drivers for anything released in this millenium.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, but needs more development, June 1, 2010

I bought this to use with some of my hardware devices that have serial ports that allowed me to use a backdoor to access the firmware in the device (ex: Netgear WG302). Windows 7 recognized the device and, with the aid of the included CD, installed and recognized the device as a USB-Serial cable. That's about as far as I got. I usually use hyper terminal in Windows to access the device via serial ports. But, even though I programmed the drivers to use specific ports in case there were port conflicts, I couldn't get any results. My advice to anyone wanting a more high-tech way to perform a firmware upgrade to their devices: Keep hanging onto your old computers. I have a laptop that I do firmware upgrades with. That way, even though I won't use it for anything else, it's small enough not to be an inconvenience.

This product doesn't function with Windows 7. I have had others that have worked just fine but needed one with the male screws. I guess it is just time to modify my other plug.

4.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for, January 4, 2012
This review is from: USB to RS232 DB9 Serial Cable + DB25 Pin Adapter / Port Adapter Converter for GPS, PDA, PC, Modem (Electronics)
Here are what wrong with this adapter:
1) It costs about $3.50 shipped; we all want cheap stuffs, admit it!
2) Windows (regardless of version) will try to install the driver for it when you plug it in, but it will complain that the device failed to start
3) Sometimes, Windows just gives up and gives you the wonderful BSOD
4) The software on that mini CD is also a pos. Sometimes it comes with a virus, free of charge. Don't we all love extra stuff? Great!
5) Some people managed o get it to work under Windows XP, but it stopped working when they upgraded to Windows 7.
6) It has been working fine for some, then all of the sudden, it stops: same system, nothing changed!
7) There are probably a few more "features", but I think the list is long enough.

So, wth did I give it a 4-star rating?

First of, you need to know what are you getting. This is a generic/clone/knock-off USB-to-serial adapter that uses a clone Prolific PL-2303 chip, this means that the driver for Prolific PL-2303 chip set will work for this one. Secondly, as a network engineer, I often come across devices with female DB9 console port that fixed raised screws on the sides, that makes those adapters from IOGear, TrendTek.. unusable. Female on female will not work, unless we are talking about... never mind.
With the right driver, this is a good backup adapter; and it only costs $3.50!

I bought two cables with two different CDs. Neither of the CDs work! There is no website to download the drivers from either. Waste of money. I bought the TrendNet cable. It worked when I downloaded and installed new driver.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY, this thing does not work, I spend 3 hrs trying to make it work and it just doesnt, the integrated chip is really low quality, which explains why the low price
