I finally broke down and bought this RSVP Endurance Authentic Mexican Molcajete. I've wanted one for decades. I love the look, and its usefulness. Getting the inside of the bowl to the desired texture was a little tricky. I did the wet raw rice, but became impatient with that after 4 repeats, little progress and sore muscles. So I went "high tech", and switched to medium grade sandpaper. Not traditional, you say? So what? I'm all for saving time & energy if the results are the same. I'd have used a rotary sander if I had one. Now the interior of the bowl and the pestle are just right for pulverizing foods without any of the unpleasant "shedding" of grit. I seasoned the bowl by grinding 3 cloves fresh garlic, some cumin seeds and some salt all around the inside surface of the bowl. Discarded that, and moved on to making quacamole. Yum.

The feet on this were very rough, so I also sanded them to a smoother finish, to minimize the possibility of damage to my countertop and table. Even so, I still put something under it for protection. This HotSpot Silicone Pot Holder, Black works very well when I'm using the molcajete, and for display, I place it on a placemet.

Remember to never wash this with any sort of soap. The best way I know to clean it is to rub the interior with a paste of salt and water, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly, and let it air dry. Salt is naturally anti-microbial. You can also place this in a 300-degree oven for 30 minutes, if you think it needs further sanitizing.

I got this for my mother's birthday and she loved it. It's the largest malcajete I could find. It has a slight problem "shedding" material but it just takes a little time to grind and season the stone when it first arrives. She's used it for her famous guacamole and it's great.
