Warning: These spoons are not standard sizes!,

This review is from: RSVP Spice Measuring Spoon, Set of 6
My spouse and I were very excited to get these spoons as a wedding gift, and have been using them in the kitchen. Just recently, we started noticing that the spoons did not look proportional to each other. Upon calibration, it was discovered that some of the spoons are not as large as they state! The tablespoon actually holds about 2/3 of a tablespoon, and the 1/4 teaspoon holds only about 1/6 of a teaspoon (both are 67% of the stated size). The 1 and 1/8 teaspoons appear to be right on, and the 1/2 and 3/4 teaspoons just a smidgen small. We have concluded that the tablespoon and 1/4 teaspoon are too far off to use in recipes...if the recipe allows for that much error, then why measure at all?

I bought this set of measuring spoons to supplement a set with perfectly round spoons which simply did not fit into the openings of almost every major brand's bottle of powdered spices. After several years of frustration, I finally got this set and have been happy ever since. I still have the older set, as the big tablespoon size is just a bit easier to level off when measuring baking soda and baking powder than the elongated design, but overall, the skinnier shape is almost always an advantage.

Great set of spoons! Well worth the price. Made to last a life time. Heavy duty stainless steel and the right shape for getting into spice jars, etc. Long enough handles. Very well designed set of spoons! I bought these for my sis as a gift (she asked for them) and like them so much I bought myself a set.

I received these originally as a Christmas gift, but I love these measuring spoons so much I bought a second set. And am considering purchasing a third set! I am CONSTANTLY using them and then they are in the dishwasher dirty and I need a clean one! These are very well made, heavy, quality, well-finished spoons. They feel good in my hands. They DO work well in spice jars, and are easy to level off for baking. As for calibration... I'm not a laboratory equipped to do that, but if these spoons are off, then so are most other measuring spoons out there! I have a set of MIU spice measuring spoons and they appear to measure the same as these spoons do. Likewise for my KitchenAid spoons and a really old tablespoon from my mom and a set of cheapo plastic spoons. So I personally would not worry overmuch about accuracy. If anyone IS worried, a quality gram scale might be a better choice. Now, there is one slight disadvantage to these spoons... the rectangular shape, while absolutely fine for spices and dry measures, is a little tougher to get stickier substances out of. A tablespoon of coconut oil will slide on out of a regular bowl spoon easier than it will come out of one of these rectangular shaped bowls. So this is something to consider depending on your measuring needs. Want a tablespoon of peanut butter? Fine... but it's gonna be harder to lick the spoon clean! For that reason, I recently bought a set of MIU spice measuring spoons with rounded oval bowls. They are also nice quality, but I don't feel they are quite as well finished as this set by RSVP. They are, however, more easily lickable. Still, I find myself reaching for the RSVP spoons more often than not. Update 5.17.2010 I DID buy myself a third set, and frankly, am now considering a fourth set! I'd like the fourth set to be devoted to measuring out liquid nutrients for my Aerogardens. The printing of the volume in milileters on each teaspoon is very useful for that purpose. It's sad... I have a whole bin in my utensil drawer devoted to these specific spoons. Other measuring spoons go in a separate bin, as I use these the most still! I never seem to have enough measuring spoons!

I have moved all over the U.S., forcing me to travel light, and choose only what was neccesary. I have left many a mixing bowl, pots, pans etc. Never would I part with these spoons. They fit perfectly into jars, are easily leveled off and cleaned, and are made to last. I put these up there with a good set of cutting knives... priceless.

Lovely, high-quality spoons,

These are great spoons - I don't know how to test their accuracy to contest what the 1/5 star reviewer said, but all the recipes I've tested so far taste great (and I use them at least three days a week and have had them a year). I also think they're a worthy contender to MIU or any other elite measuring spoon brand. Also, it looks like Martha Stewart has a comparably designed product for a few dollars more. So far no rusting - each spoon is one complete piece, no joints where parts could break off.I have two sets and love the quality 18/10 stainless steel. I have a "tubular" spice rack that consists of test tubes that stand in a red oak butcher block. All but the tablespoon measure fit into the tubes. To measure a tablespoon I just measure 3 teaspoons or pour into the tablespoon. These also fit well into a spice container you'd get from the grocery store. I'd definitely buy again for gifts.

The best measuring spoon set ever! And they ARE accurate.,
This review is from: RSVP Spice Measuring Spoon, Set of 6
These wonderful measuring spoons arrived yesterday and I am SO happy to have them. They are perfect in every sense. Perfect. I have four other sets: a Progressive set of round stainless spoons, which I really like and have been using for many years. The problem is that only the smaller spoons fit inside the spice jars; a Zyliss set of plastic spoons supposedly designed to fit inside most spice jars (the tablespoon is too big for most jars); a generic plastic set with round spoons and a Jamie Oliver plastic set with magnets which I like a lot. And none of them can hold a candle to this beautiful RSVP Endurance set. The quality is excellent. The spoons are hefty, without being heavy, and handsome. They feel just right in my hands and even the tablespoon fits inside standard and smaller than standard spice jars mouth (I've uploaded two photos showing this, see under "customer images"). Now, about accuracy. Some reviewers have stated that the tablespoon is not accurate so the first thing I did was to compare it with my other sets and I found it to be 100% accurate, that's why I made a little video so that you can see for yourself. After making the video I realized that, had I used milk or a colorful liquid, it would have shown better, but given how tricky it was to hold the camera with one hand while trying not to spill the liquid with the other, I'll just leave well enough alone. If you watch the video in full screen, you'll be able to clearly see that the RSVP Endurance tablespoon has exactly the same capacity as the round Progressive tablespoon. And while I did not include this in the video, I transferred water from the Zyliss and the Jamie Oliver tablespoons into the RSVP Endurance with the same exact results. I absolutely love this set and will order more as holiday presents. Highly recommended and a very good Amazon buy, by the way.

My favorite measuring spoons,

I love these measuring spoons so much that I have two sets. I do that for when I'm cooking up a storm and I use one measuring spoon for something wet, and then I find that I need the same measure of something dry. I also do not keep my spoons on a chain - I don't get that...seems like the one you just used would get the rest dirty. So I have untethered mine and keep them stored spoon-side-up in a small crock which used to be, in a former life, for storing tea - just like I keep my larger utensils in their own crock. I just pull the ones I need and the rest stay put and clean and out of my way. They are narrow enough to reach into most spice bottles and they are sturdy enough to last for eons. The amounts are etched on the spoons themselves, and not painted on, so no chipping or fading of markings. They are fine in the dishwasher but I do find that I need to put them in spoon-side-down or else the handle wants to slip through the grid of the silverware basket. Highly recommended.

I was initially not attracted to their shape in the picture, but when I had them in my hands I was really happy. They are sturdy, long stemmed, and really fit inside of small jars. The best happy surprise for me was the 3/4 teaspoon measure that I totally wasn't expecting. Super handy! I got two sets by accident and gave one to a friend who happened to need some. She was so jazzed and loved them right away. Would not hesitate to recommend highly.

Fits in spice jars!,
This review is from: RSVP Spice Measuring Spoon, Set of 6
I bought these spoons as an alternative to the Oxo Good Grips Soft 6-Piece Measuring Spoon Set, Black and founds that these were so much better.First, the RSVP spoons are stainless steel. I prefer not to use plastic with food whenever possible, especially now that I've learned more about the dangers of plasticides leeching into food products. And although leeching normally only occurs when the object is subject to very hot food/liquids, I can be sure that when putting my stainless steel measuring cups into the hottest cycle of the dishwasher, no chemicals will be liable to future leeching. But the main reason why I prefer the RSVP spoons is the shape. They're long and narrow instead of round and wide; this way, they fit perfectly into the little spice jars that you buy at the supermarket. With the Oxo spoons, I have to invert the spice jar and hope that not too much pours into the spoon. Finally, I found that the triangular "ring" that holds all the spoons together is flimsy and useless. I lost it immediately. The chain that holds the RSVP spoons together works perfectly and keeps all the spoons from floating in different directions in my utensil drawer. |
