Bought this to replace the ceramic one I had that was broken about a month after I bought it. Like this very much, nice size, easy to use as the top is just tight enough to remove easily but not let odors out. Cheaper than I could find in the stores.

This canister looks good on the counter but unless it's emptied every day it will begin to smell. Also, we have noticed a major fruit fly problem. We opted for the larger container and we fill it up quickly (family of 4). A previous reviewer suggested putting the container in the fridge to combat the fruit fly problem but even with a big sub zero fridge our canister won't fit. So maybe go for the smaller size and stick it in the fridge, just empty it out more often.

I bought this from a neighborhood store for about the same price as advertised on Amazon, with the added benefit of being able to check it out before buying it. Sometimes paying the sales tax is a minor burden worth bearing. The pail itself has a very nice finish on it, "pretty" as one reviewer remarked. The complaint that mold started to form in short order seems a little odd. I've used it every day, not emptying it -about 5 days for a small family of 3- since the purchase, and although not full there is no sign at all of mold. But then again, so what? It's a temporary compost material keeper (soon to be rotting food, get it?), NOT a composter. There is no odor at all, although even the odor from our now broken Norpro ceramic compost pail was minimal. When we could detect it at all, we emptied it. We use it for small amounts of leftover coffee, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, fruit and peelings, eggshells, plain mashed potatoes, vegetable remains after cutting or slicing, really a host of things that used to go into the garbage. Now it all goes into the composter, outside. Fruit flies were a tolerable occurence with our old Nopro ceramic compost pail, but again, so what? Empty it a little more often, and rinse it out. Haven't seen any with this one yet, and we always have some fruit and veggies on the counter. The recommendation to store this, or a smaller version, in the refrigerator to avoid a few fruit flies doesn't sound too well thought out. All in all, this is an easily cleanable, almost unbreakable, high quality compost keeper for countertop use.
