For the price, this is a very good Mortar & Pestle, While it DOES produce chalk, it is not in the copious amounts the people here are saying it does. The simple fact is, most stone Mortars (especially in this price range) WILL produce some form of chalk, and the amount produced here is more than acceptable (almost none at all) for just about any purpose.

Before purchasing this product, I read all the reviews. Most were positive, but there was one reviewer ho said that it produced chalk. However, another reviewer said that the previous reviewer was "on crack" and that it did not produce any chalk. Unfortunately, I believed the second reviewer.

Also, they do not glaze the insides of most stone mortars because not only would it chip and flake off over time (nobody want's to eat glaze) but you would loose the effects you gain by using a stone Mortar & Pestle (IE: May as well use ceramic)

Anyway, back to the specifics of this product, It is as described, but I would definitely wash it twice before using it, as it does come INITIALLY with quite a good amount of dust from the manufacturing process, and as stated above, it would definitely add more minerals to your diet.

After the initial washes though, while it does produce dust, however it is minimal, it is NOT anything you will need to worry about as it is not enough to cause any change in health, taste, nutrition, texture, looks, anything, what is produced. You wont notice nor will it have any effects. If you want no dust, go with a ceramic Mortar and Pestle.

So to sum up, given the type of Mortar it is, the chalk produced is acceptable (especially for this price range), The quality is also very good for this price range, and it seems to be durable as I have put a good number of hours into it now and it still works and looks as good as the day I bought it. Overall, 5 stars.

The first reviewer was NOT on crack. This set produces LOTS of chalk, and I didn't even use much pressure at all. So there is either some poor quality control here, or the second reviewer didn't use any kind of pressure.

Having owned several mortar & pestles in the past for grinding, this does the trick. Many of the mortar & pestles I looked at had very high sides which is only useful if you want to grind about a tablespoon worth of stuff.

I chose this one because I wanted a more shallow bowl which would allow for more than a tablespoon's worth of grinding.

The end of the pestle is only about an inch in diameter. I would have liked one that was wider in order to crush more in less time. That is my only gripe about this product.

I also went with the marble because I had one in the past that I loved but it had to stay with my parents when I moved out. I'm sure that granite would have worked, but I didn't like that they came only in very dark colors. Just a personal preference.

As for another reviewer who mentioned adding that the inside wasn't polished and therefore he was getting additional chalky minerals in his diet. That guy is smoking crack. Obviously, he has never use a mortar & pestle before and doesn't know how to use one. The reason the bottom of the pestle and the inside of the mortar isn't polished is to provide friction so that the items can be ground. When I first got mine, I purposely ground the pestle into the mortar to see if any residue came off of it. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Depends on what you need it for, May 15, 2011

It's a very attractive marble mortar and pestle set. However, I knew nothing about these when I ordered one. I needed a mortar and pestle to grind up some antibiotic pills so I could create a liquid solution for my ill rat. Upon receiving the mortar, I found it had creases in the bowl (apparently for better traction while grinding herbs). However, that didn't work out very well when crushing my pills. As a fine powder, much got stuck in the creases and I had a hard time getting it out of the bowl. So I think I will use this mortar and pestle for different things, and get a smooth ceramic one for my apothecary needs.

This is a very pretty mortar and pestle, but it's too smooth to get any real work done. I went with a ceramic version instead and sent this one back. Very happy with the ceramic. It has just enough roughness to work the item you're pulverising without the problem of difficult cleanup.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grind away...., February 4, 2010

Since I have begun to grind more fresh herbage, this item was purchased as an upgrade to my wooden Mortar & Pestle which had a tendancy to leach the essential oils, thereby contaminating pretty much everything ground after the first use.

I personally find that the Mortar is of a good size for my needs-it can be used as originally intended, as a hefty paperweight or a projectile weapon.

All kidding aside, I'd say it's useful in most household kitchens. The price was very good considering it's constructed of marble. The Mortar I received has a nub in the very middle of the bowl but so far this hasn't hampered usage.

"Gee like"

This mortar and pestel set is very nice. The size is just right for spices and herbs and garlic. Easy to hold in your hand to prevent slipping. Cleans up nicely and is attractive. Great deal for the price.

The product is exactly as presented in the product listing. It is beautiful and we leave it out as a piece of art. It also works perfectly and we have had no problem with dust, referred in other reviews. I highly recommend the product.

Unfortunatley when I received this product the marble bowl was cracked...this happens I was not upset. I called the vendor they were apologetic and said they would refund my money through Amazon. The funds showed up promptly in my VISA account. Cudo's to both The Secret Pantry and Amazon for handling this quickly!
