You can't have a proper southern kitchen without a big container of rendered fat somewhere on the counter. It's the law, look it up.

I had been using, I kid you not, a coffee mug and a tea strainer to store my fat. This was perhaps a little TOO southern, and led to a number of near-misses where I nearly took a drink from the wrong mug. Also a lot of pointed questions about just WHAT is that on the tea strainer.

So I ordered this instead. What you see is pretty much what you get - a big ceramic pot with a lid, and a strainer that sits on top of the pot. All put together, it looks nice and unassuming, and doesn't say GREASE on the side in large letters so there's no awkward explaining to your non-local friends just what that is on your counter and why. So that's nice - one item that stores your cooking fat and protects you from judgment. That's a win in my book.

By that, I mean, in this day & age we aren't encouraged to 'keep' grease on hand. But sometimes it's the only thing that will do. This ceramic jar is not only functual (strainer) but lovely to look at. And as I am from the 'old-school', I keep it on my range where I can 'dip' at will. In all things, moderation. I suppose the purist could use the jar for candy or cookies; but what would be the point? As an old southern cook, I 'love' my 'drippings' jar!

It's a bit larger than I needed but it is a very well made product. The screen is very fine and keeps everything but the hot grease from going through.
I would buy it again and recommend this product to anyone.

Only natural food is good for the body. Olive oil for salads, grapeseed oil for cooking, butter for cooking, but when you want real flavor, nothing works like a tablespoon of bacon grease. This is a wonderful grease keeper, that strains, also. The diameter is about 6 inces and so is the height.

I eat low carb and this is exactly what I was looking for. It allows me to keep bacon drippings for cooking and its beautiful. I like that it has a mesh strainer so that it catches most bacon fond. Its ceramic so once it cools down with fresh bacon it goes right back in the fridge. I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a means to store bacon drippings for later use.

Nice little grease keeper. The mesh works well when straining the oil after frying. Wish it was a little bigger (maybe 8 cups?) for the larger fryers. But the thing it really needs is a lip so you can pour the oil out w/ out it dripping down the side.

I concur with other Five-Star reviewers on almost all counts as to the quality and attractiveness of the stoneware crock I received. I got the white which is a soft white, like old-fashioned diner crockery.

True, it is on the large side size-wise (6 cups), and that's a whole lot of bacon frying. However, the size is very convenient for the cook who is simply collecting grease for periodic disposal. The crock itself is well made, and the lid (of a nice weight), while not airtight, sits properly with no wobble or slide. I'll probably just lay some plastic wrap across the opening before putting the lid on to keep the odd fridge smell at bay, or not. I've never had an issue with that, even keeping grease in unlidded Mason jars.

I was very impressed with the fineness of the screen in the strainer. If you've ever had a mesh tea ball, that's the gauge I'm talking about--superfine. There will be zero oddments of burned bacon in any grease passed through that sieve.

This is a major upgrade from the little lidded aluminium cans that used to be sold (and maybe somewhere still are) as stovetop accessories. My mother had one with matching salt and pepper shakers. Remember those? Those containers were never quite big enough. One was forced to put empty veg cans into service, and of course that grease got wasted. This crock is much nicer, bigger, and certainly way cooler than my Mason jars, which are now in retirement. Happy Cooking!
