Product Description

Color: Wood Grain

Embrace nature's solution to our emerging water shortage--collect rainwater! When drought sets in and rain is short, rain barrels can provide that precious water you need for your lawn and garden. Our authentic oak barrel texture is molded into each barrel and will not fade, rot or risk insect infestation. The RTS Accents rain barrel has many unique features including a flat back to sit flush against a wall, linkable to other rain barrels for increased capacity, screen to keep out debris and insects, and a shut off valve for hose hook up with dual overflow. This rain barrel can provide up to 50 gallons of pure unchlorinated water. During heavy rain falls, a typical roof can produce hundreds of gallons of water and by saving that water, you can reduce your average water usage. With those kinds of savings, this rain barrel can pay for itself in just a few seasons. A front side overflow keeps water from flooding against your outside wall. It is recommended that you drain your barrels when temperatures approach the freezing point. Optional barrel stands create a larger offset between the spigot and the ground, making it easier to fill watering cans and for general use. Wood grain.

I purchased this barrel last summer based on its great looks. I have had compliments on how good it looks. However, after the first rain fall, the barrel filled and I noticed the back 'bowed' badly. This pushed the barrel away from the house wall and when I finally emptied it, the damage was done and it is now permanently bowed. Also, the faucet is cheap plastic and the threads no longer attach well to my hose. Not a quality item - sad because it looks so good.

I love the look of this barrel. 2 annoying things though, 1) The overflow is right at the front which detracts from the look of the barrel when a hose is attached. 2) Also, when it is full of rain, it expands and the back 'bowes' out. As mine was positioned quite close to the house wall, it caused the barrel to 'push' out against the wall and ended up tilted slightly. It is still full of water right now and I hope it goes back to the original shape when empty.

Read many reviews before purchasing this product- decided to proceed since this barrel received good reviews on Hayneedle.com & Walmart.com; felt perhaps some incidents could have been isolated (luck of shipping or luck of receiving a more defective one of the bunch); last my needs were also a bit different in that we are using this to store shower water we collect while our shower heats up (i.e. not directly under a drain spout).

PROS:
The barrel aesthetic looks nice.
It holds water w/o leaking.

CONS: Previous reviewers were all correct in that:
1.) The spigot arrived with 1 handle broken.
The manufacturers place it in the barrel to ship- instead of taping it to the side or wrapping packaging around it. It bounces around during shipping and arrived broken.

2.) It was quite difficult to screw the spigot into barrel. The hole wasn't cut well- after using a wrench and some force- we were able to force it. Good news is that it does not leak.

3.) The barrel back is bowing out once 3/4 to 4/4 full. Don't feel it will recover once emptied.

ADDITIONAL NOTES-
4.) Please note- you cannot lift the lid off the top. The only way to extract water from the barrel is through the spigot or tipping the barrel over.

5.) The only thing I haven't experienced is the barrel fading. However, we've owned this for 1 month during a Wisconsin March. Sun exposure is not strong- so I'm not confident we won't also experience this issue (per other reviews).

6.) Didn't purchase the barrel base due to very poor reviews- instead are using cinder blocks.

OVERALL- I'm happy with the idea and ability to save water, more then the product itself.

I was thrilled with the quick delivery and ease of setup; however, without a working spigot/faucet, it's darn near impossible to get water out of the barrel. The spigot is made of lightweight plastic; it has quit opening up after less than one dozen times opening & closing.

Rain barrel is plastic that resembles wood (good) and is made in two halves (front and back sections) that are factory sealed together to form the completed product. The halves do not line up very well so the product looks rather cheap. Sections are offset by over 1/4"...they don't join smoothly together. It seems to me that for an item that costs well over a hundred dollars the makers could at least line up the halves when they're sealed together so it looks a little nicer and looks more like a wooden barrel than a cheap plastic one that no one cared to make right. Since it sits in a focal point in my garden I was hoping for a slightly more attractive product. It holds water, there are no leaks so that is good. I need several more rain barrels but the next few I purchase will be from another manufacturer even if I have to pay a bit more.

This is a wonderful product exactly as advertised. Setup was easy and instructions were clear and easy to follow. Only point is that spigot that comes with this barrel is a low flow spigot that will NOT work with soaker hoses. If you want to use this to use a soaker hose for watering, you will need to purchase a high flow spigot to replace the one that comes with this unit.

Like the look of barrels. Has a few flaws. Spigot on front was plastic rather than brass as was shown on web. Plastic one too low to use to fill most watering cans and hoses don't attach to it. Also cannot completely empty barrel since spigot is lowest drainage point. Back too thin so when barrel fills the back bulges out pushing barrel away from wall against which it is sitting.

I like the Barrel. It's fits snugley against the side of my house. The only draw back is the Plastic faucet. It broke within the first couple of weeks. I bought a Brass replacement at Lowes which works great.
