From the Author

Dear Reader:

I continue to be amazed and grateful for the success of my first published novel, RUNNING, which has been enjoyed by people around the world.  There is nothing as fabulous as hearing from readers who were entertained and want more!

My hope is that you have as much fun reading about Catherine, Maria, and Zane as I did making them up.  A sequel is in the works...

I picked up RUNNING on Saturday evening and put it down on Sunday at 8:15pm......what a ride! From the strong female lead to the charmer turned villain, the political intrigue and the romantic longing for what might have been, I was riveted to my Kindle. Trying to concentrate on some gardening I found my mind returning to the book and gave up on the roses to head back to the wonderfully rich world that Ms. Fitzgerald has created. (My boys had to make their own dinner but the dog and cat did get fed!)

A woman running for the highest office in the land, a gut wrenching decision from her past, a devastating betrayal all culminating in a action packed intense drama makes RUNNING a must read. (and I believe a very good story line for a Hollywood blockbuster film....Meryl as Catherine maybe?)

I am thrilled that this is Ms. Fitzgerald's first novel as it gives me hope of many more days lost in her wonderful imagination.

The synopsis: Catherine Young, Vice President and newly-anointed Democratic nominee, is surging in the polls. The race is on against GOP candidate Jerusha Hutchins, known for her big blonde hair, who is the darling of the far-right Liberty Party. But with political wunderkind Zane Zarillo running her campaign, Catherine is sure to hold onto the lead.

Suddenly a medical emergency puts the President in the hospital and forces Catherine to act in his place... a perfect opportunity for her to show her Oval Office stuff. Just when her election looks like a sure thing, Catherine's romantic fling from decades ago comes to light. Will the American public accept a woman with a past?

I thought this is a well-written story, fast-paced. There's a bit of info-dumping to explain Catherine's past that probably could have been distributed more evenly, but overall, I enjoyed it. I thought Fitzgerald did a superb job with the different points of view. The voices were powerful and distinct. Catherine grew as a woman, a mother, a candidate and an individual, and the blackmailer (I don't want to give too much away) rapidly spiraled, causing the reader to both hate and pity him while looking upon him with absolute disgust.

This story is very relevant to America's current tumultuous economy and political theater. Several times, all I could do was shake my head at the truth behind the scenes. Even though the politics wasn't the main theme, it's there, and it's true to these times in which we live.

RUNNING had me up till the wee hours of the morning! And, when I was not reading it, I was thinking about the caracters. Two women running for president, One of them has a 30 year old secret that's come back to haunt her. To top things off, there's drug addict on a downward spiral and some slimy characters Mixed in for good measure. This book book is at times funny, heartbreaking, and suspenseful. Ms Fitzgerald writes with an amazing wit and honesty. I also recommend her short story, LOOKING FOR LANCE. It's a great quick read that will have you thinking for a while :-) Enjoy!

This turned out to be a remarkably readable book. It had good pacing--the obstacles thrown in front of the main character, who is running for president, were doled out at a good rate and kept the story moving along. I would say that this novel is well worth your time. The only thing I didn't quite buy was the actions of Zane, the troublemaker in the story. As smart as he was reputed to be in the book--smart enough to find himself as a personal aide to the vice president--his actions were completely stupid and not something an intelligent person would do. Having said that, the writing, pace, and storyline were so good that I found myself putting off other things so I could keep reading. I loved the scenario of two women running for president, and found the story of Catherine's "secret" coming back to bite her after 30 years to be a peek inside what it must be like to become a public figure and have your past catch up with you in front of the entire world. I highly recommend this book as an enjoyable, fast-paced, interesting read.

My initial impression was that the story would primarily deal with election issues, campaigning and politics in general. While the story did, in fact, contain many of those elements, it developed into a far more soul searching analysis of personal tragedy and historical decisions that came home to roost. The "personal angst" of which I speak is the thrust of the story, played out amidst the political world and a candidate who did not have the luxury most of us do of shielding our indiscretions from public view. In some respects Running becomes an expose on how humans should (or should not) deal with public disclosure of human weakness. In that regard, the story is compelling.

I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style, the unique way in which the author kept the story moving, introducing new characters when necessary, and changing our view of some of the key players. This is a fine debut novel and I expect more from this new author. I highly recommend Running.

Mark my words. Patrice Fitzgerald has a best-seller in the making! I read the whole novel in one sitting, it was that good. The characters were fun, the plot line fresh, and the pace of the story right on target. I look forward to reading more of Fitzgerald.
