Not quite enough there there, April 27, 2007
This review is from: RV (Paperback)
This book is for the absolute RV beginner. While that does include me, I've read enough in the last year that the book was too basic.
The book is two people's experiences and opinions on buying & taking vacations in RVs. It's written in an easy-to-read conversational style that feels more like you are in the room talking to the people instead of reading a reference book. This book is one of anecdotes, not hard facts, though it did confirm my suspicions of the black water tank.
The anecdotes do contain some real information and do give you a feel for what life on the road might be like, but if you want a little more meat to the discussion, you'll have to look elsewhere. For example: yes, it is cheaper by far to buy a used RV, but the book doesn't cover why you might want to buy one new from a dealer. If it is never, ever a good idea, why are so many people doing it?
Given the quick read, I'd recommend this book more to libraries than to individuals. For someone who has just begun thinking about RVing, this is a nice quick introduction, but it really isn't something you'd keep on the shelf and go back and refer to again.

Short and Sweet, April 25, 2007
This review is from: RV (Paperback)
I'm not clear what audience this book is aimed at, but suspect it's for someone who has not yet bought an RV and wants to know what it might be like to travel in one. There is a friendly tone to the writing, which offers number of tips someone new to RVing would find valuable. But the depth just isn't there. The authors sound like the sort of folks I'd like to be parked next to at an RV site, so we could chat around the campfire.

Not a reference--more of a what's-the-RV-lifestyle-really-like?, May 12, 2007
This review is from: RV (Paperback)
The authors of this book have taken the words out of my mouth. I could not possibly describe the book better.
"After logging 120,000 RV miles, we decided to share with our fellow RVers a few of the things we wished we had known way back when. Little things like what to expect when suddenly you smell ammonia; how to easily change the air bags in the front springs; where that chalky stuff that streaks the outside of the coach is coming from, what's causing it, and what to do about it. Book is not an RVers Bible by any stretch of the imagination. It contains some funny stuff, worthwhile stuff, and some totally worthless stuff. We're hoping it will give old timers a chuckle and Newbies some solutions."
