Book Description

February 28, 1992 Judaic Studies Series

Critical Edition with an introduction and notes by Leon J. Weinberger

With Weinberger’s sixth and concluding volume in his series, all of the known Balkan liturgical poetry in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judeo-Greek from Byzantine and early Ottoman times is now available for study in this critical edition. This concluding text, hailed as a “monumental work,” is largely based on manuscripts preserved at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge; the British Museum; the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris; the Vatican; the Universities of Parma and Bologna; the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York; and Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Weinberger’s studies, supported by grants from the American Academy for Jewish Research, have been cited by reviewers in this country and abroad as a major breakthrough in understanding the growth and development of liturgical writing in Europe.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“There is great merit in Dr. Weinberger’s research…. He rescues from oblivion scores of little-known poets…provides not only a now-complete understanding of Hebrew Liturgical poetry in Europe but enables us to trace the growth and development of the synagogue poetic art in the Western World.” –Esra Fleischer, Jerusalem Studies in Hebrew Literature

Language Notes

Text: Hebrew, English
