Editorial Reviews

The debut record from long time Dan Zanes and Friends band member Elena Moon Park is an all-ages album of folk and children's songs from East Asia rediscovered and reinterpreted for the 21st century family. Rabbit Days and Dumplings is a soulful, playful, and unique assortment of songs from China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Tibet updated and arranged in a collaborative and personal style by Park and Friends. Native languages are mixed with English, as traditional Asian and western folk and rock instruments join to create a modern sound with deep roots that are accessible, and inviting to one and all.

Special guests include Dan Zanes, Wu Man, the Kronos Quartet, Ikue Mori, and members of Bang on a Can. Executive produced by Grammy winner Dan Zanes.

Elena Moon Park's debut children's album is a triumph. Park has created an original and vibrant blend of authentic Asian music with traditional American folk music. This is a festive, mellow and joyous blend of sound -- Fiddle, piano and banjo (by Dan Zanes himself) sing along with Chinese pipa and other traditional instruments, while Park and her collaborators sing in their native languages. Most songs mix in English lyrics as well. Park celebrates heritage while opening herself up to the energy of new directions -- a concept and a sound that is so perfect for children.

It's amazing to have a CD from a region I know very little about. The sound and production on the CD is great, and Elena's singing is so lovely. And all the guests make for a wonderful ride with each song. Not to mention the cover art, which is about as good as it gets. Thanks Elena!

Are the title and cover art not enough reason to buy this album? In case not, Rabbit Days and Dumplings is gorgeous music. The traditional Korean song Doraji turns out to be as haunting an Appalachian lament as any. Poong Nyun Ga is an exuberant and anthemic harvest song. Ti Oh Oh (Kronos Quartet!) is creepy and enchanting. (I hope that nice couple stopped fighting once the eel was cooked.) As for being a kids' album, I dunno if this says more about me or about the album, but for what it's worth I'm a childless 32-year-old and I'm listening to Rabbit Days and Dumplings all the time. The musicians are among the best in the world (I had to look up some names to realize how much so), but what makes this album is the arranging and production, which weaves styles, instruments, and languages from opposite sides of the world as though Korea, China, Japan, East Tennessee, and New York were streets in one happy village.

Rabbit Days & Dumplings - a delightful, culturally revealing group of beautiful traditional songs from a variety of Asian regions. Originally purchased for my niece, adopted from Korea, however, ended up keeping it for myself. Will definitely purchase another for my niece.

A sampler of East Asian tunes incorporating some Americana-arrangements, this album is gorgeous and adorable by turns. All the musicians involved are really skilled, and they bring the ideas wonderfully to life. But credit where due: it is the interpreter and auteur of the album, Elena Moon Park, who has done something special. Her belief that children's curiosity and musical sensibilities can reach across cultures really resonates. She opens the door to Asian culture in an accessible, joyful way.

I love this album. All the songs are arranged in a really creative way and the orchestration is very imaginative. Great music for kids and adults alike.

I heard the NPR story about this disk, and I liked the samples that were played. Definitely worth the price, recommended.
