i read the rabbit books as they were published in the 1960s. the recent tv series 'madman' took me back to the usa in the 1960s and made me want to re-read the rabbit stories that captured those times so well.
my first husband very much wanted to leave england and move to the usa in the 1960s. after long visits, i realised i did not like the value systems in the usa at that time when everything 'on the surface' was clean, neat and perfect whilst under the surface there were double standards that especially applied to attitudes towards women and blacks. eventually, my husband went to live in usa. i later emigrated to australia with our children. given the way usa has turned out, i recon i chose the better path. in the rabbit series and his other books, including 'couples', updike captured the values of usa in the 60s exceptionally well, imho. |
