4.0 out of 5 stars A decent starter book on house rabbits
I had to laugh at the previous review, which stated that rabbits should not be spayed! Tell that to the millions of rabbits spayed in the past 11 years since the House Rabbit Society was formed! Assuming a vet experienced with rabbits, this is now a fairly routine surgery, and it saves lives and leads to happier rabbits.

That said, Ms. Pavia's book, while not...

1.0 out of 5 stars about pet rabbits only
It did not help me with breeding. It said that you should spay you rabbit, that is incorect info. You should never spay a rabbit or do any other sugery on them, because their skin is to fin and silky to hold stiches and then it rips.

I had to laugh at the previous review, which stated that rabbits should not be spayed! Tell that to the millions of rabbits spayed in the past 11 years since the House Rabbit Society was formed! That said, Ms. Pavia's book, while not House Rabbit Handbook (my #1 recommendation), is pretty good. There are a few problems with it, but overall it's a good introduction, and far better than the breeder-based books out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best pet rabbit care guide I have read, April 15, 1998
By
This review is from: The Rabbit: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
The Rabbit, by Audrey Pavia, is one of the best pet rabbit care guides on the market. Ms. Pavia's book includes a brief history on rabbits (including rabbit myths), and then branches out into the importance of responsible pet rabbit ownership. The pictures are incredible, and the descriptions of the various rabbit breed types are concise and accurate. For the pet bunny owner there are chapters focusing on rabbit care, as well as rabbit behavior, and health care, and for the show enthusiast there is even a brief section explaining some slight aspects on showing and registering your rabbit. At the end of the book is a resource section that includes over 40 different rabbit breed club addresses for those interested in joining a club focused on their pet rabbits breed. As I said, this is definitely one of the best rabbit books on the market.....the best that I have come across in quite a long time, and I highly recommend it to any and all rabbit enthusiasts.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Great Book!, July 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rabbit: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
Out of my "library" of about 10 rabbit books, this is one of them that I thumb through often. Being an experienced rabbit owner, I'm not in bad need of information, but this is just a joy to read. There are lots of interesting pictures, of our floppy eared furry friends, and loads of information. A must for a "newbie" to the bunny world!

And, regarding the ignorant person who posted the comment about altering a rabbit, it is perfectly safe for rabbits to be altered. In fact, it is safer to have them altered than to not (due to testicular and uterine cancer). I'm sorry that you've been misinformed.

4.0 out of 5 stars healthy & happy rabbits need to be altered, May 26, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rabbit: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
Urban rabbits must be spayed or neutered. Not only is it safer and healthier for the rabbit, it will also help prevent overpopulation of rabbits, which results in needless suffering and euthanisia of innocent rabbits. The person who said rabbits' skin is too thin to support stitches is TOTALLY misinformed. The surgery is successfully performed around the country on a daily basis on house rabbits. Please, please read as much material as you can on rabbits before purchasing. Please get one from a shelter and not from pet stores.

the person who said that they should not be spayed or newtered is wrong, very wrong, if you look at the title it says FOR A HAPPY, HEALTHY PET! not for rabbit breeders, o well he/she is entitled to her/his opinion. but i found this book very good and it started my love for rabbits. it is very descripted and i hope you love it too.
