Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Carle originally published Twelve Tales from Aesop in 1980. Eleven of those stories were included in his Eric Carle’s Treasury of Classic Stories for Children (1988) and now 10 of them appear in a new, redesigned book. The most noticeable change in the text is the addition of a stated moral at the end of each fable. The painted-paper collage artwork is now reproduced larger than before on whiter, glossier pages. Libraries with shopworn copies of the earlier books on their shelves may find that the fresher, more vibrant-looking artwork here is reason enough to purchase this one. Grades K-3. --Carolyn Phelan

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a charming rendition of eleven Aesop's fables!, May 23, 2009
This review is from: The Rabbit And The Turtle (Hardcover)
Almost everyone has heard and come to love Aesop's fables as a child. It's fun to hear someone retell the fables in their own words and it is even better to listen to a child guess the moral of the story. The inimitable Eric Carle has done the beautiful artwork and retold eleven of these tales for a new generation of listeners. Of course children can read these tales, but it is always more fun to listen to a storyteller's rhythmical voice relate a tale. How many of these tales do you remember and can you still hear the voice that may have told you the story?

The Lion and the Mouse

The Wolf and the Dog

The Fox and the Crane

The Cat and the Mouse

The Monkey and the Fox

The Rabbit and the Turtle

The Wolf and the Lamb

The Frog and the Ox

The Blackbird and the Peacocks

The Fox and the Crow

The Grasshopper and the Ants

The illustrations are unique and endearing. The stories, done in Eric Carle's own "voice," have a slightly different twist, but essentially remain the same as the classic tale. For example, the moral of The Lion and the Mouse is usually said to be "Little friends may prove great friends." In Carle's slightly different rendition it is "Friends come in all sizes and shapes." The print is fairly small and might be difficult for the young reader. This book would be a marvelous read aloud book in a classroom or homeschool setting. "Do not try to be something you are not." Can you guess which fable this moral comes from?

5.0 out of 5 stars 11 fables, April 13, 2011
This review is from: The Rabbit And The Turtle (Hardcover)
Eleven fables illustrated by Eric Carle - one of our favorites. Each fable is medium-length and has a full-page illustration.

We like how these animals are wearing people-clothes. Eric Carle knocks my socks off.

The stories are:

1) The Lion and the Mouse

2) The Wolf and the Dog (The Collar)

3) The Fox and the Crane

4) The Cat and the Mouse (Belling the Cat)

5) The Monkey and the Fox (Be Yourself)

6) The Rabbit and the Turtle

7) The Wolf and the Lamb

8) The Frog and the Ox (this one is so funny!)

9) The Blackbird and the Peacocks

10) The Fox and the Crow

11) The Grasshopper and the Ants (happy ending)
