Book Description

4 and upP and up
In the middle of the night, Rabbit wakes up and finds his daddy
isn’t in bed. He wakes his mother, who says that his father has
probably gone into Rabbit’s room to sleep. Now Little Sister is
wide-awake, too. And together they search. Daddy is not in
Rabbit’s room, but the belt from his bathrobe is, so he must
have been there. But where is he now? Rabbit and Little Sister
set out on a hunt for Daddy, and anything can happen at
night . . .

Expressive pen-and-watercolor artwork enlivens this cozy
bedtime read-aloud that the whole family will enjoy.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-In the wee hours of the night, Rabbit misses his daddy. He checks in all the usual spots, but can't find him anywhere. Little Sister wakes up and is ready for a hide-and-seek adventure. Thinking maybe their father went to buy carrots, the buck-toothed pair gather their courage and look outside. When the front door locks behind them, they call for help, And since no one could scream louder than Little Sister, it sounded pretty impressive. Daddy emerges from the basement, surprised that his whole family is awake. Gimbergsson's pen-and-watercolor illustrations are bathed in a shadowy blue wash and capture Rabbit's droll expressions and Little Sister's poses. Children will enjoy the comical elements in this bedtime slice-of-life scenario, such as the witty repartee between the siblings, Mommy's rumpled appearance, and Daddy's restless insomnia.-Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Story and Illustrations, December 23, 2011
By
This review is from: The Rabbit Who Couldn't Find His Daddy (Hardcover)
This is such a lovely story. Brother Rabbit wakes, middle of the night, in the family bed and Dad is not there. For Brother Dad's location is a dire mystery to be solved. For younger Sister, Dad's disappearance is an adventure. Mom, upon hearing the news, is able to "keep calm and carry on" (back to sleep). Brother and Sister embark on a night-time journey searching for Dad. He might be anywhere...

There is so much to like in Lilian Edvall's prose. Her steps to solve the mystery are sensible to any kid or adult reading. Despite a different perspective, Brother and Sister Rabbit are charmingly supportive of one another. Sara Gimbergsson's illustrations are delightful. She draws a comfortable, lived in, home and a sweetly, accurate looking, family bed. As a bunch of co-sleepers, this is the one element of the book which cinched our purchase. I'm so glad this title is in our home. We read it frequently, with joy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cute illustrations but not a good story, April 10, 2008

This review is from: The Rabbit Who Couldn't Find His Daddy (Hardcover)
This book has very fun and colorful illustrations that go so nicely with the night setting. That was the nice thing I could say about the book. But there are so many things about this book that are not of value. Not that any one thing by itself is a reason not to buy the book, but all put together, there's just too much negative for my personal taste. For example
.......the house is a mess, with toys and junk laying all over the floors, counters, etc.

.......The rabbits all sleep in mom & dad's bed, and since it's so crowded the dad has to go sleep in one of the kids' beds.

........The kids think it's OK to open the front door and go outside at 3 a.m. NOT something i want my kids to be doing, or even get the idea of doing...

........when the family is trying to decide what to do at 3 a.m. the mom makes a suggestion, which is refuted by the children, and the children automatically win.....AND the dad doesn't even acknowledge the mom's opinion.

Like I say, I am not trying to make a huge deal about these things, but all together, and since there are literally THOUSANDS of other books to choose, I would choose another one. If you want bunnies or beautiful nighttime illustrations, I would suggest instead: Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep by Joyce Dunbar, or Time for Bed by Jane Dyer.
