Amazon.com Review

From Booklist

It is a fact of modern life that we delay marriage, get divorced, live alone, or just plain decide not to have kids. Is it any wonder that our dogs have become our family and that 90 percent of dog owners say they’d risk their lives to save their dogs? Best-selling author Satran (How Not to Act Old, 2009) takes a humorous look at our dog-obsessed society, enumerating the various ways we can indulge our pets. We can take them to a spa for a “pawdicure” (including nail polish, of course) or a lovely hot-oil soak. We can purchase a CD of “Silent Night” audible only to dogs. And, finally, when our best friends have met their end, we can freeze-dry their bodies in a naturalistic pose—sleeping is the usual choice—or throw them a traditional funeral complete with casket and headstone. As Satran points out, no matter how crazy we may have gotten about our dogs, there are always others out there who are even crazier, and this book will help pinpoint where on the dog-crazy spectrum we lie. --Nancy Bent

Bought this for a friend who is "over the top" with her dog. It is a big hit with both dog owners and non-owners. Some of the truisms gave her a chuckle. Other thoughts were "tongue in cheek." It does cause an owner to stop and think as there are quizzes for the dog owner to answer regarding feelings toward the dog and its activities.

This was a great book and easy read----great beach book... Funny and so true as any dog owner will recognize...seeing everything about dogs in one book gives a great perspective of the craziness! Highly recommend this book!

I asked for this book on my Christmas Wish List. With the minimal narrative and the plethora of pictures, it's just okay.

I think I was expecting more "stories" of over the top pet ownership, much like the types of stories Celia Rivenbark presents in her stories on manners and everyday life. Instead it was little chapter intro's by the author and then either definitions (like the chapter that details the meaning of various types of grooming offerings) or pictures (2 whole pages of pictures of dog clothes...something that would be easy enough for me to Google for images) or lists. The idea of the book was probably more funny, in my opinion, than the book itself but worth a browse, if you see this book at a library or can get it for under $3. It justdoesn't seem to be a book I will keep in my collection for any length of time.
