Book Description

February 17, 2002
The word raccoon is drawn from the Native American Algonquian language. Their term arakun roughly translates to “he who scratches with his hands.” Anyone who has found a raccoon rummaging around in a once securely closed trash container can attest to how skillful raccoons are with their front paws. In fact, they have four times as many sensory receptors in their forepaw skin as they do in their hindpaws, a ratio similar to that of human hands and feet. Samuel Zeveloff explores this trait and much more in his accessible natural history of raccoons.

Written with the general reader in mind, Raccoons presents detailed information on raccoon evolution, physical characteristics, social behavior, habitats, food habits, reproduction, and conservation, as well as their relationship with humans and many other topics. The section on distribution and subspecies focuses on the raccoon’s current range expansion, and the material on their cultural significance demonstrates this mammal’s unique status in different North American cultures.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I wrote "Raccoons, A Natural History" with the general reader in mind. It is the most thorough volume written on this fascinating mammal. It presents detailed information on the raccoon's evolution, physical characteristics, social behavior, ecology, and management. There is also material that reveals the raccoon's unique status in various North American cultures. The comprehensive nature of "Raccoons, A Natural History" should make it the standard work on this fascinating mammal for years to come. It is richly illustrated with photographs and original artwork. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for natural history buff/environmentalist, but..., December 29, 2003

This book fulfills its promise to provide information for those among us wanting to know as much as possible about the bandit. The only shortcoming is the sparcity of photos and the absence of even a single color print. I blame not the author for his writing is impeccable.

Still, this book is well worth the money!

This is a very nicely written book, which covers everything from the systematics to the life cycle and habits of raccoons. It answered all of my questions spurred by meeting (and becoming enchanted by) a nearly tame raccoon. It is the quality of book one had come to expect from the now defunct Smithsonian Institution Press.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid information, May 2, 2008

Systematic approach and good over-view. Well-written, would have liked a few color pictures to illustrate some points, but very helpful overall.
