Students - First of all: if you are a student you should go for a used previous edition. Some of the statistics are updated, but it is pretty much the same thing with a different cover (typical publisher syndrome). The price for this new text is outrageous! It is a relatively small sized book (slightly bigger than a regular hardback novel) lacking any extras (even photos). You will be fine with the previous edition (or even the one before that) which will cost you much, much less!
Second: the book is just text and diagrams in gray scale (not even one photo) so do not expect a colorful fun text like most introductory textbooks tend to be nowadays. This one is a brick with text, text, text.
Third: it is hard (and not very fun) to read, but it has very interesting information.

Content: A very informative book covering a number of topics linked to ethnic conflict. The text emphasized the United States covering Native Americans, Asian Americans, African Americans, Hispanics, Jews and Whites over the time span of the last few centuries. It also used Brazil, South Africa, Northern Ireland, Canada as well as Western Europe as international case studies. Marger crams information into this book and occasionally disrupts the text flow with tables and diagrams. The book could have benefited with some photos interspersed here and there accompanied by case studies. The text generalizes quite a bit so it is easy to lose track of that one is actually studying the lives of human beings. Beyond that caveat the read was quite worthwhile adding new information and perspectives to a multiethnic and global world. Unfortunately, ethnic conflict prevails and is likely to continue into the foreseeable future. Marger's book certainly helps a reader to understand and ideally navigate these waters better. It was not a very exciting experience to read this text, but certainly worthwhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding book!, January 9, 2013
My experience with this book has been nothing but outstanding. Each chapter in the book is structured in the same way. First it introduces the Race and divides it up into nationalities. Second it provides information on how they were able to migrate into the United States and their role. Third provides information in terms of social economic factors, education, and demographics. Fourth it talks about assimilation and prejudice/racism the race may face.

The book is very detailed with information. Though to the deatailed information the book provides it a reader can easily be lost, this highlighted the most important information down. From my experience I won't be reselling it just because it contains plenty of information I may need during my college courses in the oncoming years.

The book has some stains along the edges and some of the pages are a little stuck together (just on the edge nothing damaging), but it arrive quickly, is still usable, and it was way cheaper than buying on campus. Thanks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Enforces the ridiculous ideology that all white people are racist., February 18, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It offers a lot of historical information that you don't get taught in schools, which is the only thing about this book that I like. The whole book is about generalizations (which it breaks down), includes facts and figures that reinforce these generalizations, then basically says that if you believe or use them in any way you are racist. For example, the stereotype about how Asians generally do better in school - it explains the mentality in the family and culture, gives numbers and figures that show where the stereotype originates (basically proving it), then condemns specifically white people for even thinking such a thing. Another example would be explaining the stereotype how most people from India don't eat beef or pork: by the book's definition, if I were to have a dinner party for all my Indian neighbors, and specifically prepared vegetarian, fish and chicken meal options instead I'm being racist.
