1.0 out of 5 stars A very basic overview but inadequate
A very basic first year text book. There is a wealth of information to be found in the references for those with the interest to find them, but unfortunately this does not translate into sound text with a clear understanding of the topic. Just one example (a gender one) of how much the text is a rehash of some old cliches and how little real thought has gone into...

1.0 out of 5 stars A very basic overview but inadequate, January 11, 2009
A very basic first year text book. There is a wealth of information to be found in the references for those with the interest to find them, but unfortunately this does not translate into sound text with a clear understanding of the topic. Just one example (a gender one) of how much the text is a rehash of some old cliches and how little real thought has gone into advancing knowledge can be found on page 16 in a discussion of minorities: "women .. can be analysed with many of the same concepts and ideas that guide the analysis of other minority groups". Note the all important "other". Since when have women been a minority group? This is not simply a slip into an all too common cliche - it reveals an underlying lack of understanding of the concepts themselves. The book is OK as a prelim textbook for some non-advancing course perhaps - but woefully lacking for any serious student. A clear idea of what Healey means by diversity would also have helped, as would a much more detailed description of what he means by ethnicity and race - the given definitions are not only inadequate, they do show little real understanding of the concepts or of the extensive recent literature on the topic even within the US without looking beyond at countries with a much richer analytical history in the field. Instructive is looking at who is not quoted rather than who is.

So far this is the best text book that I've had to use for school. It's very intresting so it's not boring.

Very left, liberal view of a topic. It seems to take on a 'victim' and opinion mentality verses stating facts. Avoid college classes which require this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Surface research, August 12, 2005
This book is OK for a beginning look at prejudice today however it only looks at the surface. Prejudice has tatics that are sophisticated today that are not addressed.

1.0 out of 5 stars I am a college student, required to read this garbage, March 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have an extremely left, liberal Sociology teacher, so of course I am forced to buy this book. I attend the California State system and ALL students are required to take a race and ethnicity class in order to complete their degree. The teacher comes across as, and in my opinion, very anti-American. I leave class thinking why in the world do I live in a country that has no regard for any race other than whites? Well, the answer is simple. The teacher WANTS us to think that way, so therefore, this book is his number 1 choice.
