Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Warm the body and soul on a cold winter's night with a home-cooked meal of spicy chili or comforting baked macaroni and cheese. To prepare either dish, Rachael Ray offers this covered 5-1/4-quart casserole. The casserole's oval form fits neatly on stovetops, while the construction adapts for oven use. Crafted in cast iron, the casserole resists warping and breakage, while it deftly retains and distributes heat. The porcelain-enameled coating eliminates the need for pre-seasoning along the casserole's interior, which most cast-iron cookware requires. To transport contents to and fro, the casserole proffers two loop handles on the short sides of its oval form. The fitted cast-iron lid contains flavor and heat for more efficient and tasty cooking. A top-mounted knob aids in easy lid removal. For the best care, allow the casserole to cool before washing it by hand. Avoid abrasive scrubbing pads and harsh cleansers to preserve the casserole's enamel. Dry immediately to prevent corrosion. A limited lifetime warranty covers the China-made casserole. The casserole measures 17-1/3 by 10-3/4 by 6-2/3 inches and weighs 16-1/5 pounds upon shipping. --Jessica Reuling

2.0 out of 5 stars Some problems emerging with the casseroles., May 2, 2007
These "made in China" casseroles are pretty, and similar to Le Creuset in appearance, enamel over cast iron, however people are noticing the enamel does not stand up well to heat, and it cracks. (See reviews on "Rachael Ray 3-1/2-Quart Cast-Iron Covered Round Casserole, Blue", and talk with people who handle returns at your dept. store.)

Additionally, the casserole has a cheap phenolic (plastic) handle on the top cover, which the manual says are "oven safe" ONLY up to 350 F temperature. This makes no sense, when recipes may call for 350-400 degree temperatures! A 350 degree handle is just as hot to the touch, be it made of cheap plastic or cast iron. Batali's handles are good to 500 degrees, Le Creuset's handles are good to 450 degrees, Rachael's cheap plastic handle will be melted slime, long before then at just 350 degrees!

Quite a few bakers know that oven temps may vary from 50-75 degrees from what is "set", at times! While using plastic handles saves a small expense for Rachael, it may limit oven temp setting to 300-325 for some, to put in a margin of safety, to avoid lid handle meltdown. It just gives one more thing to worry about while cooking-to not let the handle melt into a puddle of goo.

Rachael, get better quality control with the next batch, and please give matching cast iron handles instead of cheap plastic, and make it easy on customers!

2.0 out of 5 stars doesn't make sense, October 24, 2008
I bought this at Marshalls for $40. I needed it for a recipe and wanted to get a cheap french oven to see if I would really get my moneys worth out of it.( The good ones really set you back). Honestly, the pot itself is fine, cleans well. But why, Why?, would you put a handle that can only endure 350, on a french oven that can be heated to 500? AT first I said well it is for low temp cooking no problem. Well the second recipe I attempted needed a temp of 400, I had to remove the handle and ended up burning myself.
The point is the handle ruins the pot, I wouldn't even spend $40.00 on it if I had to do it all over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Pot, May 6, 2007

We have the smaller Rachael Ray casserole and it works great on camping trips in the RV, but the oval casserole is better in that it can hold a whole chicken, a large gumbo or most anything we use to make in the dutch-oven at home -- with these two added features of being easier to clean and looks great as a serving dish. In addition, the shape makes it easy to stir and serve in.
