While many people have been active in the environmentalist movement, Rachel Carson can legitimately be considered the founder. Her book "Silent Spring", published in 1962 was a clear warning about the mounting dangers of environmental contamination. Like all pioneers, Carson faced a great deal of hostility to her positions, yet in hindsight it is clear that her detractors were wrong. The arguments against her were fairly typical of those used against people who are the first voice in a cause, attempt to paint the person as an uncompromising extremist.

Carson was a trained scientist and should be a role model for all scientists, females in particular. She was one of the most influential people of the late twentieth century, although she is often not included in a list of such people. Written at the level of the late elementary school student, this book should be required reading in science classes for the young student.
