Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This collection of 100-plus comfort foods from UK television personality Allen may be a hit in her native country, but probably won't fare as well across the pond. Though she offers conversions for most measurements, American cooks will likely be frustrated with her vague (or absent) descriptions of ingredients like "flat mushroom" (shiitake?) for Mini Mushroom Bruschetta with Rocket, Olives and Parmesan, and Smarties (the British equivalent of M&Ms) in her Polka-Dot Cookies. Still, dishes like a kid-friendly Croque Monsieur, Chicken with Lemon and Honey and Pan-Fried Scallops with Truffle Beurre Blanc are on the mark, as are Baked Eggs with Chorizo, Cream and Cheese and sides like honey roasted parsnips. A lengthy digression on sherries, however, is likely to bore rather than inform, and a page devoted to fresh-squeezed juice is barely worth including. Too hit-or-miss to wholly recommend, entries like mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, brownies and burgers push it into dangerously pedestrian territory. Rounded out with quintessentially British tips (how serve tea and sandwiches, etc.) this will best be appreciated by fans of Allen in particular.

4.0 out of 5 stars So Good I Could Eat It, June 8, 2009
This review is from: Rachel's Favourite Food for Living (Hardcover)
Rachel Allen, Irish TV chef has produced a fine cookbook here with easy-to-make recipies that are both mouth-watering and accessible. What I want in a cookbook is to advance my knowledge of food and create delicious recipies that are fun to make and do not take 3 Michelin Stars to execute. Here you get some wholesome recipies from staple foods like Fillet Steak with the most devine brandy sauce, Korean-Style beef, a host of fabulous desserts and party favourites...There is something for everyone here and plenty to choose from as there is no limit here on the quantity of recipies between the pages. Recommended.

This review is from: Rachel's Favourite Food for Living (Hardcover)
The first time I received this book it was in a large box with other items. The dust cover was torn and the hard cover was crushed in several places. I returned the book and received another in its place. That too came in a box without any extra packing, other than two air "bubbles". The book was lying in the bottom of the box with the bubbles on top. Of course, during shipping the book banged against the inside of the box. The dust cover was slightly damaged - a bit scruffed but not torn. As I wanted to give it as a gift before Christmas, I did want to return it again. You used to always pack books in a corrugated tightly fitting package and they would arrive unscathed. Please return to that method of packing. You surely must be getting a lot of complaints about the new packing habits.
