A definitive Rachmaninov Second Symphony,

I was floored the first time I heard this CD. Fischer goes deeper into this often-abused score than anyone I know of, and reveals it as an incisive masterwork rather than a vehicle for wallowing in lush sonorities and hammy emoting. It's apparent even from the phrasing in the opening bars that this is special--one of those recordings that sets a new standard in the music it represents. This conductor/orchestra partnership is not one you would normally associate with a Russian composer, but so much for preconceived notions.

I have little more to say beyond the comments in the other featured review. This is a MAGNIFICENT performance, and should be in everyone's library.
BUT it is important to add that the full glory of this "apotheosis of Russian romanticism" really becomes apparent ONLY in the SACD version of this disc. BUY the SACD. It's worth it. |
