“The text has a strong introduction to the study of race and ethnicity that would be valuable in any course. Part 1 does an impressive job of laying out the key terms and ideas with which every student should develop a familiarity.”

-Brian Jara, The Pennsylvania State University

“[This text has:] 1. great coverage of the groups; 2. good use of facts and stats; 3. good coverage of group-specific contemporary issues.”

-Gerald Titchener, Des Moines Area Community College

“Great overview of all the important groups, areas, and issues.”

-Dr. Loyd Ganey, College of Southern Nevada

“All the tables, figures, and boxed features are informative, easy to understand and useful. I will often reference these in a lecture and draw student's attention to a specific feature to make a point.”

-Jose Soto, Southeast Community College

“This is a very thorough analytical text on minority groups in the US, supplemented with cases, global perspective and research focus. The text covers major topics and themes pertinent to diversity issues.”

-Mominka Fileva, Davenport University

About the Author

Richard T. Schaefer grew up in Chicago at a time when neighborhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition. He found himself increasingly intrigued by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighborhoods and people’s jobs. In high school, he took a course in sociology. His interest in social issues caused him to gravitate to more sociology courses at Northwestern University, where he eventually received a B.A. in sociology. This interest led him to obtain his M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Schaefer’s continuing interest in race relations led him to write his master’s thesis on the membership of the Ku Klux Klan and his doctoral thesis on racial prejudice and race relations in Great Britain.

He has taught sociology and courses on multiculturalism for 30 years. He has been invited to give special presentations to students and faculty on racial and ethnic diversity in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas.

Schaefer is the general editor of the three-volume Encyclopedia of Race, Ethnicity, and Society (2008). He is also the author of introductory sociology books with McGraw-Hill. Schaefer coauthored with William Zellner the ninth edition of Extraordinary Groups (2011). He served as president of the Midwest Sociological Society from 1994 to 1995. In recognition of his achievements in undergraduate teaching, he was named Vincent de Paul Professor of Sociology in 2004.

Just like any text book for a classist had what I needed for the class. I found it to be simplistic and written well below college level. It met my expectations of text books in being both over priced and if the tests had not been designed to fit it less than helpful. I got a good grade on the class with very little effort and only reading small amounts of the text.

An extremely useful book in today's debate about race and ethnicity. While in class I've noticed this mentions almost every racial conflict that could occur, and it has also given me a better idea of other people's cultures. It came in great condition and on time, price isn't too bad also.

I regret purchasing the KINDLE edition of this book. The book its self is a great book for understanding the concepts of Racial and Ethnic Groups for my Cultural Diversity course. I should have ordered the hard copy and not the e book within kindle. This was my first e book purchase through the kindle app for pc and I do regret it. The reason I gave it two stars was for the convenience. I was in need of the book right away and could not wait for shipping.

On my PC the font is hard to read and it does not give options to help this issue as other books off the kindle allow. Also navigating through the chapters and pages of this e book is not as seamless as other books on the kindle.

Expected more up-to-date stats! Too many statistics remain the same a year later. For example, the same scenario of immigrants are discussed as being 48 or 54 years old in Chapter 4 one year in the 2011 edition and the same age a year later. There are also typos in Chapter 4 in the section entiitled Population Growth, which shows insertion of a clause or two while statistics remain the same or are generalized. My university uses the 2011 twelth edition of this book, I purchased the 2012 thirteenth edition thinking there would be more up-to-stats. My fault I am sure. Perhaps, I should have purchased the fourteenth edition.

I took a race and ethnicity class and I would say that this is pretty detailed and the author definitely shares facts and is considerate of each race stated. Definitely worth a read if you're not quite "in the know" of things, which is important to function period.

I feel as though we all know "information" but don't know how to properly explain things or just need another outlook, this could really help.

I wasn't hip on spending money on a textbook, but being in college, Amazon has great deals on books. I needed this book at the last minute and Amazon had the best price. The book was in good condition and arrived timely. I look on Amazon for a lot of my textbooks and have even downloaded some to my Kindle. The book was actually interesting, too. Thanks!

I have been ordering college books for the past two years and this it the worst yet. Information within text is cut off, page numbers are on inside corners, chapters are not labeled well, no table of contents, graphics poorly organized for black/white print. I would not recommend this book to anyone. Invest money in the electronic version!!!!!!
