Good, but not the best...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Racing After Midnight (Audio CD)
"Racing After Midnight" has got to be my least favorite in HMS's discography. It doesn't have as many catchy tunes as "The Big Prize" (1986), "Monsters Under The Bed" (1991), or their self-titled debut album (1984). This was HMS's last album before they started to change players from the original lineup, and it seems to reflect that in most of this CD's songs. Recommended only for inveterate fans (realistically, I rate this work as 3 1/2 stars).

Come on, how can you not like this album?,

I have to agree with the reviewer from Ontario; it's time to bring the rating up on this great 80's rock album!
It's true that this 1988 release has a more commercial sound than its predecessors, but not by much. Besides, are we really expecting a ton of substance from Canadian AOR bands? If you want moody introspection, go buy a Smiths album. If you want feel good, catchy as hell, arena rock, Racing after Midnight's got it in spades! So what if the album is a pop-oriented, keyboard laced, soundtrack ready (Lethal Weapon anyone?) serving of AOR? That's what makes these 80's albums so much fun. Honeymoon Suite, along with fellow Canadians April Wine, Triumph, Loverboy, and later Von Groove and Harem Scarem, could always be counted on to deliver high quality melodic rock albums, and Racing after Midnight is no exception. It may not have stretched the band much artistically, but it's still a completely enjoyable album that's as fun today as it was almost 20 years ago.

Honeymoon Suite's third effort is very much like the first two, so if you liked them you'll like this one too. If you haven't heard them before, I would say the first three albums are all great-downhill from there!

The Honeymoon Suite album that caught me,

Honeymoon Suite is another band that was known yet unknown. Great songs from "The Big Prize" helped get them radio airplay. I found this album after its release many moons ago and it is a staple on my playlists. The tunes are very catchy and melodic. Great riffs run throughout the album. "Looking Out For Number One" is a nice anthem of sorts.
To me, this is the album that really hooked me into the band. Sadly, this was the album that shot them down and I do not know why. I used to see this CD in the cutout bins for under $1 and I would pick it up and give it away to friends. Not one ever complained that the album was terrible. It rocks. Is it a classic? No but if you are into straight ahead rock, check this out. It is worth it.

i don't understand why this is only given a 3 star rating; i'd give it a strong 4 stars! this album is a lot more edgy than it predecessor, "the big prize", and on the whole, better song for song. it is more reminiscent of their first release, but more polished. i have owned this album since it's release and i still enjoy it. though it didn't contain a mega-hit, it is full of catchy, driving, pop-rock tunes. "looking out for #1" and "love changes everything" are two of the finest songs in their catlogue, and are a strong indicator of the flavour of the album. definitely a good pickup for any rock/hard rock fan!!

I hate it when good groups run out of gas and just start putting out music with no emotion. This cd is such an example. There's not much substance to this cd, at least compared to their early cds. The songs are lacking any power in a big way. It's not that it's that bad of a cd; it's just lackluster and sometimes too sterotypically eighties with the cheesy, overdone keyboards. I would suggest The Big Prize instead of this one, which is, in my opinion, the best cd from this extremely underrated band.

I was born in Niagara Falls. I'am in love with Johnnie Dee... he has my heart on a string. What does it take Johnnie? I might live in Kamloops but my hearts' in Niagara Falls.
