Book Description

7 and up2 and up
Wendell O. Scott made history as the only black driver to win a race in a NASCAR Grand National (now Sprint Cup) division. Born in Danville, Virginia, he scrimped and saved to buy his first car, a Model T, at age fourteen. Although he "loved to turn the wheel of a racecar, work magic on an engine, and then push it faster than it was ever meant to go," he never had the resources or sponsorship to buy a brand-new racecar. Using secondhand Fords that he fixed up in his garage, he competed in five hundred races in NASCAR's top division. Eric Velasquez's illustrations and Carole Boston Weatherford's rhythmic text illuminate the story of a man who worked full-time while racing on the side. A man who married, raised six children, and educated all of them. A man who "didn't just dust the competition, he blazed a trail." A man who raced against all odds. An Author's Note is included.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wendell Scott Book, November 7, 2009

This review is from: Racing Against the Odds: The Story of Wendell Scott, Stock Car Racing's African-American Champion (Hardcover)
I was truly dissapointed with the book. I was not expecting a child version book.
I have meet Windell Scott. I truly admire him. It was quite a sight to see his family at the racetrack.
So many children, so well behaved.
I was looking forward to an adult version book.
As far as a children book it is great.
I will keep watch for a more adult book in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Facts are good, artwork isn't, April 6, 2010
This review is from: Racing Against the Odds: The Story of Wendell Scott, Stock Car Racing's African-American Champion (Hardcover)
This book is pretty square on the facts of Wendall Scott's life, how he wanted to race, did so against the odds of being an African American in the South and having to run a shoestring operation. The illustrations, however, leave much to be desired. The individuals portrayed aren't very in keeping with how they really looked. Wendall's pictures are reasonably close, but Buck Baker doesn't look anything like Buck Baker.

That said, it is worth getting for the information for a child who is a fan of NASCAR and needs some history.
