4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money, January 9, 2007

This review is from: Racing Engine Builder's Handbook: How to Build Winning Drag, Circle Track, Marine and Road RacingEngines (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this book after I bought Engine Builder Handbook from the same author. The book contains a lot of good information which can be applied to many engine not only American V8. However, it would be better to include the techniques for the Japanese and European twin-cams engines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Racing Engine Builder's HandbookHP, February 26, 2009

I consider myself a pretty attentive engine builder. This book was an excellent compliment to the extensive experience I have already. It contained many well thought out subjects with the relative details that will aid me for many more builds to come. And it should do so for anyone who choses to read it.

I have read other books written by this guy and like his approach. It is technical but in a common english way. Anyone can understand what he is saying. I think he does a great job explaining things also. The examples are easy to relate to.

... you probably need this book. Unless you're a pro builder, there is plenty of information in here for you. Yeah, you may know how to stuff the pistons in the cylinders, but do you know how to calculate airflow? Or fuel flow? You know how to degree a cam, but do you know what factors influence you selection?

This book is a great follow on to Mr. Monroe's "Engine Builder's" book. He throws a lot of examples of the math required, with a detailed explanation. He has little performance tips, as well as things like when and how to deck mill, equalizing combustion chamber sizes and how to mill the heads.

If you're building an OHC engine, this will still be useful (I'm not), but there are a number of areas you can skip, and some others that it needs. But CFM is CFM and ring gaps haven't changed. He does list many things in both SAE and metric.

This book won't be a "bench book", but I'll bet some pages get greasy.

It's a very good handbook, and useful specially for who already have some knowledge about engines and their operation. It gives lots of practic hints about all the parts of an engine.

Publications by this author are usually always good. This is no exception. Very well written, worth the price without any exception. I highly recommend this book to add to any automotive library.
