Revivals of Frank Loesser's classic musical Guys and Dolls ensures that Damon Runyon's brilliantly witty world of gangsters and gamblers remains as popular as ever. But readers would be doing themselves a favour by going back to the source, as Runyon remains one of the most individual authors the USA has ever produced. This selection (with a canny introduction by Robin Oakley) has many of Runyon's best-loved comic characters, from Lemon Drop Kid to Hot Horse Herbie, all conversing in that marvellous present-tense argot that Runyon made his own. And, of course, the track is where Runyon's characters function best - and new readers would well be advised to start with this delightful volume. (Kirkus UK)
