Book Description

Omega Book October 22, 2002
Here is a very exciting book, reflecting a very exciting time in the exploration of consciousness and evolution. With the possible exception of the rise of the great Idealist movements two centuries ago, today is the most gripping period of research in consciousness that we have ever seen. For the first time in history we have access to almost all accumulated information about human consciousness and its potential. Zen Buddhism, shamanism, body/mind disciplines, the great contemplative traditions, mysticism, and many more have given us an extraordinary map of human consciousness based on direct meditative experience, right up to contemporary marvels of scientific research, giving the enquiring mind an all-inclusive model of human consciousness and its unfolding.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Combs proceeds to show us not just in words, but in a compelling journey through the research and theory of both Eastern and Western philosophy and science what consciousness seems to be in all its many dimensions. I think his book will be a benchmark for a long time to come."
-David Loye, Ph.D., Author of The Sphinx and the Rainbow; Center for Partnership Studies

"Allan Combs...adroitly presents the grand possibility that systems/complexity theory, cognitive neuroscience, and the great mystical traditions can work together to illuminate that most ordinary yet mysterious power we all possess, which Combs prefers to call "subjective presence" or more plainly, "consciousness".... Combs centers his reader in a consciousness that beholds the entire living museum and artifice of mental structures while also describing the most evolved, if distant-sounding stages in the evolution of consciousness. If while reading The Radiance of Being you become a bit giddy, perhaps it will be because Combs' words and incisive quotes have guided you into, then out of the labyrinth of the mind and onto that "farther shore" where only the One Shines, ever-new."
-Stuart Sovatsky, California Institute of Integral Studies,
Cybernetics & Human Knowledge, Vol. 6, No. 4, 1999

"There is a new interest in the nature of consciousness in the scientific and scholarly communities, an interest vitally needed in our times of fragmented and forgotten values. Too often, though, this interest is too specialized, too narrow. It is refreshing to find Combs, in The Radiance of Being, prepared to deal with the full spectrum of human consciousness, and deal with it both competently and creatively!"
-Charles Tart, Transpersonal Psychologist; author of Waking Up

"Trained in mathematics, mechanical engineering, and philosophy, Combs attempts to present in The Radiance of Being the full theory of human consciousness, and deal with it competently and creatively. This book will be required reading for any serious student of the mystery of what we are, and are to become."
-Word Trade: A Readers Guide to Recent Books and New Media

"This book will be required reading for any serious student of the mystery of what we are."
-Herbert Guenther, Buddhist scholar

"Here Combs transcends the faded antimony of "The Two Cultures" and demonstrates the unity of human knowledge in his lucid synthesis of modern brain dynamics with a broad sweep of history and mythology. It is a stunning achievement."
-Walter Freeman M.D.,

This is a must book for those interested in integral studies. While much of the work is similar to Ken Wilber's at least in structure, this book in many ways transcends Wilber's works with some real original thinking. Not surprisingly, the author is an authority on integral thought without trying to parrot Ken Wilber's view. Combs is a very clear and insightful writer, with no polemic axe to grind nor does he cling only to his view.

5.0 out of 5 stars Integral Inspirational Theory lives on . . ., January 27, 2006
This review is from: Radiance of Being: Understanding the Grand Integral Vision; Living the Integral Life (Omega Book) (Paperback)
I would have to agree with the previous reviewer. This book is, I daresay, soon to be a classic within the transpersonal/integral/consciousness field. It is a pure reflection of the author with a generous dose of inspiration and objectivity (as far as Wilber is concerned). Though I understand the caution with which recommendations are concerned I still feel that this book is recommended reading for all students of transpersonal, consciousness, and transformative disciplines. For those who are familiar with Wilber's work, this is especially true. For all other purposes, it is a hallmark of future evolutionary development. Do not pass it up.

Yours truly, Ph.D. student at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology

Still reading the book but it appears to pull together man spiritual and science concepts togther into a readlily accessible paradigm or integrated model for all persons seeking a model to understand all the various histotical traditions in one book. Very readable in my opinion. Ken Wilber also would be a great supplement if you like this book.
