About the Author

Katherine Lenel has studied to The Fourth Degree of The Radiance Technique(R) and is an Authorized Instructor who teaches The First Degree and The Second Degree. She is also the Head of Performance for the B.F.A. program in the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Miami and a teacher of voice and speech/communication. Her study of The Radiance Technique(R) began in 1982 and continues in the present.

She has a B.A. in English literature from Hope College and an M.F.A. in acting from the University of Minnesota. She has performed Off-Broadway and in regional theatres and taught in the professional actor training program at Boston University. For twelve years she maintained a private studio in New York City serving lawyers and other business people in need of coaching for professional presentations. She also acted as dialect coach for several Broadway productions.

Foreword: It is a very great honor to introduce this book on "The Radiance Technique(R) and Cancer." It is estimated that by the year 2000 one in three people in the United States will have directly experienced some form of cancer. The Radiance Technique(R) has been used in the modern world since the 1970s to assist those with cancer in moving through their illness with a maximum degree of ease and wholeness. Dr. Barbara Ray devoted an entire chapter in her definitive work on The Radiance Technique(R), "The 'Reiki' Factor in The Radiance Technique(R)," to her early experiences with cancer patients and to the experiences of patients who learned to use The Radiance Technique(R) for themselves. That chapter is reproduced in this book in its entirety. Indeed, Dr. Ray has once again provided the impetus for this compilation of sharings by and about those who have direct experience with both TRT and cancer.

I want to say a special thank you for the opportunity to participate in the co-creation of this book. Dr. Ray encouraged me to keep a journal of me experiences from my diagnosis of non-Hodgkins lymphoma onward and then actively formed a network of inner and outer support for me during my cancer treatment. On one occasion, even before I began chemotherapy, Dr. Ray and six radiant friends gathered as a group to use the hands-on TRT with me to prepare me for treatment. After that, while we were often in different cities (and even countries), they used the technique for directing energy beyond space/time to continue radiant support during the entire year in which I was also being treated medically. In doing so, my radiant friends held me in a cradle of love and well-being that allowed me to stay conscious enough to notice and even appreciate what was happening to and around me. When I first began to write, I felt shy about acknowledging publicly what I was clearly coming to experience, that there ARE inner planes and that we are never alone "there." I recognized that my buoyance and capacity to keep moving were coming from somewhere beyond my personality. I had grown up a tense and fearful child with a propensity for expecting the worst. Perhaps because it was so much a part of my background to question and doubt this inner support, I began by being deliberately myopic about the connection between the energy directed to me by others and my remarkably smooth passage through cancer and chemotherapy. I will now say, quite publicly, that I know I have experienced the vast benefits of inner-connection on the inner planes and that I can see the fact clearly demonstrated in the wonderful sharings of those who networked with me during my illness. Readers should know that those who contributed to this writing did not consult with one another until the very last stage of publishing. In a way, we are all seeing the evidence of our deep sharing as we read these words together.

The power of The Radiance Technique(R) is deep and unending. TRT is a profound gift for any human being, yet when one is challenged with a life-threatening disease like cancer, the gift becomes miraculous. Cancer became an opportunity for me to learn what LIFE can be. Others in this book can testify to the same realization. Chapter 1: This book is about my experiences with the disease of cancer and the use of a transcendental energy science called The Radiance Technique(R). My process with cancer began consciously in 1991 and is ongoing at this time....

My cancer journey has been affected dramatically and at every turn by my use of The Radiance Technique(R). Some cancer patients come to say, "This disease is the best thing that ever happened to me," and what they seem to treasure is a new, deeper experience of life and its possibilities. I have found that cancer has been the occasion for real growth and expansion in my awareness of myself on many levels and in the value I place on life experiences that, before my illness, I dismissed as unimportant. My sense of values is still shifting and my experience of pleasure, joy and fulfillment is being enhanced a hundred times.

Those of us who use The Radiance Technique(R) in our daily lives have a tool in our hands for automatically accessing and amplifying this deeper experience of life. When the opportunity of the disease meets the accessibility of the awareness, wonders are truly performed.
