Book Description

0876857721 978-0876857724 November 1, 1989
Critics view Radiant Silhouette as a critical point in the career of acclaimed author John Yau. Publishers Weekly, for example, has recently remarked that "[Yau's poems] churn along with the bright inventiveness that ha[s] characterized his work . . . since the selected Radiant Silhouette from 1990." The inventiveness in question is one borne of an ethnic background that is at the fore in the work of Yau.

Radiant Silhouette created the buzz about John Yau, and it is worth seeing what in turn created that title: the celebrated poems herein plumb the rejections, joys and confusions of growing up Chinese-American, and they are essential reading for any American, Chinese- or not, in today's America, more a melting pot than ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars A radiant book, December 24, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This book is a classic of postmodernism and one of the great books in Asian American literary tradition. It includes poetry and prose, and it mixes language play with memoir. It specializes in feelings of non-belonging and in the sensation of surprise. Take a look at such texts as "Chinese Villanelle," "Toy Trucks and Fried Rice," "The Telephone Call," "Avenue of the Americas," "Cenotaph," "Red Fountain," and "Engines of Gloom and Affection." Such texts haunt you. They're hard to absorb and hard to let go. When starting any new poem, you have the uneasy sense that it might be a masterpiece.
