Product Description

S.E. International Radiation Alert Inspector Xtreme USB is handheld digital radiation alert detector. It has built in efficiencies for common isotopes to calculate activity in Bequerels and DPM. It is optimized to detect small changes (low levels) in radiation levels and to have high sensitivity to many common radionuclides. The new back lit display shows readings in your choice of counts per minute (CPM), counts per second (CPS) uSv/hr, mR/hr, or in accumulated counts. The Inspector Xtreme USB counts ionizing radiation changes, and the unit of measurement is selected and displayed using the mode switch. The display shows various indicators, based on the mode setting, the function performed, and remaining battery power. These include low battery, alert, timer, total mode calibration mode, utility menu (timer, calibration, alarm set mode), and units of measurement. Reading ranges: 0.001 (1&muR) to 100.00 mR/hr, or 0 to 350,000 CPM, or 0.01 to 1000 µSv/hr, 0 to 5,000 CPS, total counts 9,999,000 µSv/hr. Calibration: Calibrated electronically using the free Observer USB software. Accuracy: MR/hr + or - 10 percent (NIST), + or -15 percent maximum 0 to 100, µSv/hr + or - 10 percent (NIST), + or - 15 percent maximum 0.01 to 1000, CPM + or - 10 percent (NIST), + or -15 percent maximum 0 to 350000 (referenced to CS137). It has a factory default calibration reset option that will automatically reset to auto averaging, mR/hr, CPM, and CAL (calibration) 100. Energy sensitivity: 3340 CPM/mR/hr, referenced to Cesium (Cs) 137. Energy sensitivity detects alpha down to 2.0 MeV. It detects beta at 0.16 MeV with typical 25 percent detection efficiency at 1 MeV. It detects gamma down to 10 keV through the end window. Detection: Smallest detectable level for I-125 is 0.02 µCi at contact. It detects gamma and x-rays down to 10 keV typical through the window, and 40 keV minimum through the sidewall. GM tube: A halogen-quenched, uncompensated GM tube with an effective diameter of 1.75-inches. The detector is powered by a 9-volt alkaline battery (not included).

Very easy to use radiation detector that includes setup software.

I also like the fact that you can 'set or select' the measurement for various types of radioactive materials you want to measure in a particular situation.

Those efficiencies will be a hoot if I ever have a chance to use them.

I had originally wrote a review for the Inspector USB model, but found this one on Amazon too. I bought the boot separately and ended up paying an extra $10, so if you're considering buying the Inspector USB I recommend that you get this unit with the boot already included. It functions exactly like the older versions of the Inspector, but has a few more features. Not least of which is the internal memory that saves your readings. It's not turned on when you get the unit, but once you set your time and date, it's a pretty handy feature to have. You get free software with it from the manufacturer's website (no Apple version though, only Windows) that adds a number of features to the radiation detector too.

I've been following www.netc.com for a year now. Last summer in 2013, most US readings were in the low to mid double digits. Starting around the end of 2013 (October or later), readings skyrocketed to the lower to middle triple digits over most of the USA. Syracuse & Buffalo readings were in the 150-200 CPM range for many months! You're supposed to call hazmat at 100 CPM!!!

I've been watching YouTube videos of Geiger Counters in use, and this one seems to be a popular one. I've been seeing readings of 1000+ CPM from rainwater collected off of cars on damp paper towels. I've been seeing readings of 1200+ CPM on airplanes in the northern hemisphere over the USA.

If 120 CPM is close to 380 nanoSieverts, 1200 CPM is close to 3.8 microSieverts, which is what some sensors really close to the Fukushima disaster read on a daily basis since 3/11/2011. I'd hate to be on airplanes for a living, or even for one flight!

So I bought this detector in June 2014, and my first readings are 20-60 CPM in my living room and outside on a sunny day. I checked the netc site, and I was surprised that all the readings in the USA were back down into the double digits again with very few exceptions on the single or triple digit side. There were still remaining maximum readings at some stations up over 300 CPM, and LA was clearly at 270 CPM for weeks before I ordered this!

Anyway, all gov't monitoring of radiation ended within days of the nuclear accident, in the USA, Canada, Japan, everywhere it seems. All that is left is buying your own detector, but don't expect the media or local politicians to even care if there's a high reading on your beach, there's a news blackout & a political coverup.

Living on the US West Coast I was concerned about mounting radiation levels for my family. (Fukushima, etc)
Needless to say, I've used it a ton since it arrived. I put it on my HEPA filter & was shocked at how high the
readings were (200!) So, no more vac'ing my filters, now I carefully replace them!
Plus, we are looking to remodel some counters & I take it with me when we go counter shopping.
Most tiles & granite read surprisingly high. This unit will help me make a better final choice.
It's sturdy, fun & easy to use, plus, the silent option makes it much less conspicuous to use in public.
I'm looking forward to checking out the readings on an airplane.
All in all, a small price to pay for peace of mind.

SE international has great staff. They answer all my questions. The inspector GC is perfect for letting me in on more of the physical world then I can imagine. The learning curve is steep but SE international makes it an exhilerating climb. Those efficiencies will be a hoot if I ever have a chance to use them. Now if they can make an affordable mass spectrometer.

Better than most of the detectors out there as it measures alpha and can be used to take pretty accurate readings for ionizing radiation in food if you follow the instructions on the SE International website. I also like the fact that you can 'set or select' the measurement for various types of radioactive materials you want to measure in a particular situation.

This is the 2nd unit I've purchased. First one was for me and this second one is for my daughter who lives in Kauai. With the ongoing nightmare in Japan, every family should have one of these. I just keep mine set on CPM and watch the numbers climb as the disaster continues to get worse. I live in AZ but radiation has spread beyond the mainland here in the U.S. and some areas are pretty bad, especially on the east coast. I like this unit. It's simple to use, easy to read, seems to be a solidly built piece of equipment with a heavy duty protective outer case. If you can't afford this one, buy something you can afford. You really cannot afford NOT to own one. The situation is dire and everyone should know what they're being exposed to at any given moment. Good luck in your quest.

Shipped on time and came as advertised. This was a gift for a family member, and it turned out great! the fact that it has built in isotopes was a major buying factor since spectrum analyzers are required with most models. Depending on whether or not you know what your doing the presets are a huge plus with this model. Even if your a novice this piece will work for you and will continue to work as you learn how to use it and become seasoned. This is one of the only products that comes with software to analyze your results as well as technical support and free calibration after a period of time. This comes in handy if you use it on a regular basis or occasionally. The factory warranty grants a free calibration for the first time but factory specs are more than good. This is a perfect product for the avid user or anyone who is weary of a changing ecosystem. Don't be fooled! This is the real deal. Fukushima has had a huge impact on the environment and will continue to do so. This is a must for anyone wanting high quality for a reasonable price. No matter what, if you like it or not, we are all going to have to deal with radiation in the years to come. It would behoove you to have something like this in preparation for the future: it is inevitable!
