4.0 out of 5 stars Fun - But NOT the same version as in bars
No, this is not the same version you see on the big machines in bars. This is a television hook-up version.... meaning much lower-tech. However, it appears to be addicting none-the-less. I have never played this game. Well, once maybe but that's it. My husband and 10-year-old son on the other hand play it all the time. And yes, we have Wii and we have Playstation,...

This is sad. A game that had a ton of potential (who doesn't want to play Golden Tee at home?) yet is sorely lacking. I can't believe the Golden Tee people put their brand name to this. Hope someone at the company made a buck off this lousy game cause they sure cheapened their name with this junk.

This is sad. A game that had a ton of potential (who doesn't want to play Golden Tee at home?) yet is sorely lacking. I can't believe the Golden Tee people put their brand name to this. Hope someone at the company made a buck off this lousy game cause they sure cheapened their name with this junk.

The fact that this game runs off batteries should be a warning sign. It's just plain weak. Complaints: The graphics are lousy, there's only one course, putting looks/plays awful, the trackball is bad, the whole interface is slow, the sound effects seem to be from the era of Pong. It's really really that bad.

I don't know why they made this game. Golden Tee has such a cult following that they could have probably charged 100+ bucks for a real trackball console with a bit of memory and a choice of courses w/ good graphics. Something that replicated the full-size game. And I bet people would have bought it, too. Now nobody will trust them when/if they ever do that.

[...] I don't even like video games but I was excited by the prospect of this thing. And it totally let me down. I'd give it zero stars if possible.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed is an understatement, October 15, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: PlayTV Golden Tee Golf (Toy)
I had been looking forward to this game for quite some time. I was so happy to finally get the game. After installing the 4 batteries I hooked the game up to my TV and was disappointed before I even started playing. The graphics were horrible and the screen was shaky. Besides the look of the control panel this is nothing like the real game you find in the bars. I am surprised Incredible Technologies was willing to put their name on this product. The trackball is a joke. It barely spins and you can't get any power on your shots. You never see the golfer like you do in the real game and when you are putting you can't adjust for hill, terrain, or anything else. Putting is too easy. There is no way to miss. Driving and fairway shots are unreliable because the weak trackball doesn't respond to what you intend to do. I don't have the money or the room in my place to buy the arcade version so I figured this would be a good substitute. Boy was I wrong. There is no course selection and the course you do play is absolutely boring. I am going to return this unit tomorrow. It is way too frustrating and there is no way to get any enjoyment from this game. I think I am going to head to the bar now, play the real game, and drink until the memory of this cheap imitation is long gone.

As I side note: I wish you could give a product 0 stars. It doesn't seem fair that 1 star is the lowest you can go. One star gives this product way too much credit!

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT YOUR GOLDEN TEE, October 16, 2006
This review is from: PlayTV Golden Tee Golf (Toy)
I WROTE A REVIEW FOR THIS GAME ON TARGET.COM, BUT I JUST WANTED TO ADD ONE MORE NOTE TO MY REVIEW, OR MORESO, THE IMAGE THAT YOU SEE IN THIS AD. LOOK AT THE SCREEN ON THE TV, THIS IS NOT, I REPEAT, NOT!!!! WHAT THE GAME LOOKS LIKE. I CONTACTED TARGET.COM TO LET THEM KNOW THAT WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS FALSE ADVERTISING AND THEY RETURNED MY SHIPPING COST IMMEDIATELY. BUT NONETHELESS, DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE SCREENSHOT, IT IS FROM THE REAL ARCADE GAME, NOT THE PLUG-N-PLAY YOU ARE LOOKING TO BUY. LIKE THE OTHER REVIEW, I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING! GO TO THE BAR AND PLAY THE REAL GAME AND SAVE YOUR MONEY, FRUSTRATION, DISAPPOINTMENT, AND THE GAS MONEY TO GO RETURN THE GAME THE NEXT DAY. TRUST ME, YOU WILL.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, December 13, 2006
This review is from: PlayTV Golden Tee Golf (Toy)
I bought this from Target and wish I hadn't now. The images on the box are deceiving. I think Atari or orginal Nintendo may have had better graphics than this! It's not even close to the game you'd play at the local tavern or bowling alley. What a waste of money, hope you don't waste yours on this too because you will be GREATLY disappointed!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not golden tee, December 8, 2006
This review is from: PlayTV Golden Tee Golf (Toy)
I am now the laughing stock of my friends, why because I payed money for the lamest excuse of a 8 bit console tv plug and play ever. My atari plug and play has better graphics and feel than this. There are bars that have the projected GTEE screen that makes the game all most real I feel my little tv had to much resolution for this toy making it feel not so real in fact in two words "it sucks".

I have never played this game. Well, once maybe but that's it. My husband and 10-year-old son on the other hand play it all the time. And yes, we have Wii and we have Playstation, so they have entered the 21st century. Three of my neighbors' husbands also happen to have this game - they're all addicted. If they start playing this at night, expect it to be a loooong night. We even take it and a small tv camping with us since all the "men" (late 30's early 40's) like to play it at night.

So, as far as I'm concerned, for the price it's one of the best toys we've ever purchased for those grown-up boys! And it's even fun for the little boys.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but not close to the version in bars, December 23, 2009

I bought this for myself and was hoping that it would be similar to the version I play out with the guys occasionally. The game has some differences and the graphics are not close, but its really inexpensive so that is not a shock. What was surprising is that my 5 and 6 year old boys were all over it, which required them to learn the rules of golf. They had a ball. When I do get to play I do enjoy it.

SO YES, THIS IS NOT THE GOLDEN TEE YOU ARE USE TO, BUT I BOUGHT THIS GAME TO PLAY IN THE CAR, WE HAVE A REAR SEAT DVD AND THIS GAME HOOKS RIGHT IN. IT IS FUN FOR MY 2 1/2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, MY 18 AND 20 YEAR OLD BORTHER'S IN LAW AND FOR ME A 32 YEAR OLD DAD. GAME PLAY FOR UP TO 4 PLAYERS AND IT MAKES TRAVEL GO BY FAST WHILE HAVING FUN. IF YOU TAKE ROAD TRIPS AND HAVE A REAR SEAT DVD WITH RCA HOOK UPS, ITS A MUST IF YOU LIKE GOLDEN TEE AT ALL.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad on it's own merits., December 5, 2011

This was originally written in March of 2010 when I first got it.

This thing has gotten a LOT of flack. I don't think I've ever actually read anything good about it, but it's mostly from people who are familiar with the arcade game. And it's totally understandable, because though I've only actually played the arcade arcade version of it a couple of times ... I know how fanatical people are about this. The arcade game is a GORGEOUS game that obviously plays extremely well with it's unique and damned innovative trackball control scheme. It's definitely a hard core game for video game golf nuts.

This is NOT that arcade game. Flat out. As an arcade translation, it's pathetic. The only thing it has in relation to the arcade game is the name, the fact it's a golf game and the trackball ... which I'll get to in a minute. This honestly shouldn't have even been called Golden Tee Golf purely because of the hardware. A TV game setup is NOT capable of doing a good reproduction of it. And that's how I'm going to review it, completely ignoring the Golden Tee name and just going on it's own merits. Which it DOES have.

Let me start off by saying, I only play golf games casually. I'm not super hardcore into them, which is probably why this game appeals to me. I hop in, I play and I leave. And that's with any of them. Right now I tend to jump into Tiger Woods Online and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 on the Playstation 2.

Let's start off with the unit itself. It has the typical hookups for a game like this with the yellow RCA for video, and the white for mono sound. It takes 4 AA batteries, or you can plug it in if you have an adapter that'll fit seeing as how it doesn't come with one. But I've never had a problem with the battery life in this thing, they seem to last forever. And I just have cheapie Rayovac batteries in it. There are 4 arcade style buttons and the trackball. Now the buttons themselves feel really good with a nice tight click to them when you hit them. The buttons control things like aiming left and right and your backswing. The big red button is your Start button. The trackball itself feels just as stiff as the buttons though. It doesn't seem to really move freely like one would expect, you've really got to put some oomph on this thing to get it spinning, but it's not that huge of a deal. It's really easy to pull off the different type of shots that you can do in the game all the same with it. The size of the unit is pretty good with a nice little indention at the bottom to easily set it in your lap, or rubber feet in each of the corners for sitting on it a table or something. Overall, I think the build quality of this thing is pretty good for a TV game.

Now onto the game itself. Graphically, it sort of comes off like a mix of a Sega Genesis game and an original Nintendo game. The colors are flat and washed out, but on the same note they do their job and they do it decently. The entire game is played from an overhead perspective with the exception of the tee shot. The sound is pretty pathetic though, and it definitely won't help someone who thinks golf is boring think otherwise. All the sound is a low quality garbled mess. The music, while fitting for a golf game like this ... just the quality is absolutely atrocious. The cheers from the crowd and whatnot are just little 1 second samples that sound like they're cut off before they finish.

But in the end, it does PLAY well with all kinds of different shot types, and chipping it in for an Eagle feels pretty good. You can have 1 to 4 players playing, obviously passing the unit along. There's Stroke Play, Match Play and a Tournament. But they all seem to pretty much play the exact same way on the exact same single course. And of course it has a driving range. Another course or two would've helped out a lot, and being able to name your golfer would've been another nice little touch. All you get is "Golfer 1" "Golfer 2" etc etc and seeing as how it doesn't save any settings I don't think it would've been that much of an issue to let you enter your own name in.

6.0 - This game is definitely NOT going to appeal to everyone. But seeing as how there is a shortage of games like this on that particular platform (TV Plug and Play games) that attempts to take it seriously, it's definitely not a bad game. On my grandmother's 91st birthday, a lot of the family was around, and I just brought this up, hooked it up to the TV and played a 4 player game and had a blast. That's the kind of environment this lends itself to. And, surprisingly enough, my 8 year old daughter loves to play it.

If you can find this in the 10 to 20 dollar price range, go ahead and snag it up. It's definitely well worth it. Just ignore the fact that it's had the gall to call itself "Golden Tee Golf".
