I bought this product as a Christmas present for my 9-year-old brother and sister, and they still haven't stopped playing with the devices. They even recruited a few friends around the block to join in - responding to a comment made earlier, I'm pretty sure not all of these neighborhood kids have devices, so I'm positive the PC clients works well. Regardless, the IM Me's are simple to use - my bother and sister even set them up largely on their own. I can't say enough about the educational value. I'm big believer in encouraging young minds to take advantage of technology (I wish I was encouraged as a child), and both my bother and sister are proving increasing savvy with the help of the IM Me. They're all set for the future.

The kicker for me was security. I must say I'm a bit of a traditionalist, so the ability to set up a fixed group of chatting partners is vastly preferable to the open IM programs where you never know who's going to contact a child.

The bottom line is that the device is a great piece of technology, providing the longest interactive experience my bother and sister have had in a long time (and sturdy... both devices have been dropped a few times already and still work great). I might even buy one for myself so they can communicate with me at a distance... I can join the fun!

Easy to set up. My 8 year old uses it with no problems. She and her friends have lots of fun with it and it keeps her from texting with my phone (and has quieted her asking for her own phone, for a while at least).

I purchased two of these toys for my daughter and her best friend as Christmas gifts. They were both so very excited. We installed the software and set up her account but are not able to add friends. When we tried to add friends on her account we get a "server unavailable please try again later" message. After several days of the same message I gave up and called the 1800 number. The rep at Mattel I spoke with had never even heard of this toy. She went on to tell me that it was discontinued and they were no longer offering service for it. I explained that I had just purchased the toy and she was shocked to hear that they were still being offered for sale. Mattel is sending me a voucher for something else but the company rep I spoke to said the IM-ME toy is useless and I should just throw it away. What a waste. Please save your money and don't buy this toy.

My daughter and her best friend age 10 got this and love it. Its amazing. Although we found a great deal at Bealls for only [...] each. They learn the keyboard much quicker, which is needed for computer reports they do. Great thing. Better and cheaper than a cell phone.

The sale of this item is nothing short of theft. It is a piece of plastic that beeps but that will never enable messaging as advertised. We received this gift from a grandparent who could not have imagined that it would never work! In fact the website handling the communications has been closed for over two years. That information was provided in small print on the packaging but could not be seen online. I called Mattel and discovered that when the model was discontinued it was selling for around $8. Now two years later on Amazon...

I got this device for my computer-hogging 12 yr old and she loves it! I feel safe knowing that she will be using this product in a much safer environment - I have watched way too may episodes of "To Catch a Predator" on MSNBC. So if you are like me and want to keep your children from becoming a target of computer sex predators, IM ME is the perfect solution! Your kids will love you for getting them a cool new toy too :)

This product does what it says it will, but beware it isn't compatible with MAC. My kid's friend only has a MAC so we wasted some $ and disappointed 2 BFLs.

My daughters, ages 6 and 8, love it! They enjoy texting each other frequently. Works great, no problems.

I bought two of these for my 7 year old granddaughters (cousins) so they could keep in touch. I also thought they would be good educational toys.

The problem is that you cannot stay logged in and wait for the other to get logged in. Every time one cousin has tried the other is not there. They have given up trying to reach each other now.

I love this toy its greaat it got here it is here i am useing it and i am happy!!
