SAY HELLO TO THE RADICALS OF THE PAST !, May 30, 2011
This review is from: Radical Faith (Paperback)
John Driver's book "Radical Faith: An Alternative History of the Christian Church" is 337 pages long and is divided into 21 chapters and an epilogue. I have often referenced it in my own articles and books. Its main focus is to introduce the various movements and individuals in church history who stepped beyond the bounds of institutionalization, to some degree, in order to restore something of the principles, patterns, and power of the early first-century church.
There are several strengths to this work. First, it provides a sweeping and inspiring review of church history from the times of the apostles to the twentieth century. It reviews such groups as the Montanists, Donatists, Waldenses, Franciscans, Anabaptists, Quakers, Methodists, Brethren, and others. Second, it tells the other side of the story, focusing often on many of the forgotten and alternative movements that sprung up at diverse times and in diverse places who challenged the biblical validity of the theology and practice of the established church of the day, whether Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, or Protestant. Third, it provides helpful insights into the personalities and circumstances of many key figures who helped shape these grassroots movements. Fourth, it is written by a man who himself has participated first hand in establishing and encouraging similar Christian movements in his own context, especially in Latin America. Finally, the epilogue deals with an analysis and assessment of the lessons his readers can learn from church history.
My main criticism of this work is lack of depth at times. It would have been a stronger work if even an additional 2 to 3 pages of discussion was devoted to each group, including a more in-depth analysis of lessons from history in the epilogue. My curiosity was triggered, but not always satisfied, requiring me to do my own further research on some of these movements.
Overall, however, I think anyone who reads this book will be challenged to look at church history from a different perspective and get back to more apostolic New Testament beliefs and practices in their own contexts, than is often practiced in many of the established churches today. This is an excellent basic introduction to those just beginning to discover the other side of church history for the first time!
