5.0 out of 5 stars A BROAD COLLECTION OF WRITINGS (circa 1973) FROM THE EARLY WOMEN'S MOVEMENT, September 14, 2011
This review is from: Radical Feminism (Paperback)
Anne Koedt wrote in the Preface to this 1973 book, "In its most general formulation the goal of the radical feminist movement is the complete elimination of the sex role system. The articles in this collection, although each covers a specific aspect of sexism, all reflect this basic feminist goal... this anthology is primarily concerned with the analysis and activities of the current movement... The purpose in selecting and organizing this anthology was to present primary source material not so much about as from the radical feminist movement... the articles are more a product than an explanation of that political process."

Authors included in this collection are Susan Brownmiller, Naomi Weisstein, Mary Daly, Kate Millett, and many others.

"...you are violent against yourself for every time you were afraid to try something for fear of failing, for all the hours lost on make-up and shopping, for every woman you missed because there was a man in the room, for getting YOURSELF stuck as a housewife or in a job you hate because 'marriage is your career.' This phase of anger turned inward is terrifying." (Pg. 40)
"The Negro analogy has been challenged many times on the grounds that women do not suffer from the same overt segregation as blacks. This point is well noted. But it is important to realize that blatant discrimination is just one mechanism of social control." (Pg. 138)
"The Women's Liberation Movement... can be divided into three areas: (1) The largely economically oriented (usually Marxist) segment... (2) liberal groups like the National Organization for Women... and (3) radical feminism, which chooses to concentrate exclusively on the oppression of women AS WOMEN." (Pg. 238)
"Sex roles and male supremacy will not go away simply by women becoming lesbians. It will take a great deal of sophisticated political muscle and collective energy to eliminate sexism." (Pg. 250)
"I disagree with the Radicalesbian concept of the 'woman-identified-woman.' For we ought not to be 'identified' on the basis of whom we have relationships with." (Pg. 254)
"Betsy Ross sewing the flag was participating vicariously in a male revolution. The rights gained were not for her." (Pg. 320)
