Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Italian Divisionism was arguably the most significant art movement in Italy during the last decades of the 19th century. Often misinterpreted as a simple derivative of French Neo-Impressionism, Divisionism actually diverged from the French school in both aims and results. Italian Divisionists were motivated by a basic dissatisfaction with modern civilization and a desire both to endow art with a scientific approach and make it an instrument of social change. At the same time, their work was often deeply Symbolist in character.

This book features many first-generation Divisionists, including Vittore Grubicy de Dragon, Giovanni Segantini, and Gaetano Previati, together with Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, and others who later launched the Futurist movement, yet were profoundly influenced by Divisionism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful mixed bag of post-impressionist Italian painting, January 26, 2009

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
"Radical Light: Italy's Divisionist Painters" is a well-researched and strikingly illustrated catalogue of Italian painting from the late 19th Century until the years immediately preceding WWI. It accompanies an exhibition that opened at London's National Gallery in 2008 and just closed at Kunsthaus Zurich in mid-January 2009. While there have been hundreds of exhibits of the works of French Impressonists, Post-Impressionists, Fauvists, Nabis, etc., other early 20th Century art movements have been less appreciated and exposed. "Radical Light" is therefore a welcome and valuable commentary and serves to balance the scales a bit.

As documented in this exhibition and catalogue, Italian painters of the time were not unaffected by the vigorous creativity of the French art scene, but were building and working in their own social and artistic context. The so-called Divisionists were appropriately enough divided roughly into two separate groups--those leaning toward symbolist painting, drawing on themes and techniques of their Italian Renaissance predecessors, and those interested in portraying modern social and political themes, tying into the growing socialist and populist movements of the time.

Both groups produced some truly wonderful beautiful and emotionally moving artwork which is abundantly illustrated in this catalogue. Among the artists represented in this publication are Emilio Longoni, Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, Giovanni Segantini, Giacomo Balla, and Umberto Boccioni. There is both sobriety and flambuoyance in these paintings and the developing trends toward Expressionism and Futurism are clearly visible, particularly in the several paintings of Boccioni included in the catalogue.

This is a great addition to any collection of art history books. Highly recommended.
