Gr. 4-8. These two solid titles in the Radical Sports series offer good overviews for beginners. Each volume begins with an extremely brief introduction to the sport that includes some historical background. Subsequent spreads review clothing and equipment and physical preparation (Skiing includes some preslope stretches; Caving offers tips on energy snacks and gear checks). Later sections introduce basic techniques and pass along a few tips on more advanced maneuvers. Caving gives hints on mapping and cave protocol as well as an overview of international caving--a subject rarely covered in a children's book. Skiing closes with tips about caring for equipments, slope safety, competitions, and profiles of "skiing greats." Both titles emphasize safety throughout, and the short, readable texts and sharp color photos of young people in action will make these popular browsing choices. For more titles see the Series Roundup in this issue. Gillian Engberg
