This book was a surprising find - excitingly original in its content. Probably not for someone new to the field of nondual philosophy. Rather than another work of "pointers" or a system, the reader is presented with a short series of "observations" or "maxims" on the nature of life. For example, that this moment is truly the only time we ever have - but presented not as a "teaching", but rather a logically argued conclusion to a philosophical discussion. When the mind truly accepts the inescapable logic of the conclusion, one can't help but be in nondual presence, or at least in a much more richly lived moment! (and this moment is ALL we have). I've read this little gem three times, which is unusual for me, and will again in a few months when I've lived with the contents for a few months.

I bought this book (Kindle edition) thinking I can't lose much at that price and because of other readers high reviews. Well, I lost plenty. I lost my pride of having read so much of Advaita and Zen literature and my pride in having thought and thought on this subject for years and years. This one hit me hard with its simplicity and it blew me out of my pride and prejudices. It is a homerun outta the park. It is deceptively powerful and yet beguilingly simple and quiet. You do not feel like you are reading a book of ancient wisdom replete with Sanskrit or Japamese words and of esoteric ideas of esoteric disciplines. There are no regimens of meditation, diet, sleep deprivation or self-flagellation, no dancing, no drugs nor yogic postures and no bone numbing exercises. No search for gurus, ashrams, monasteries or some caveman in some god-forsaken place or out-of-circulation books or pilgrimage to Himalayas or Zen masters in China or Japan. Just a damn little $1.00 book that hit me out of the park. It simplified the integration of all sides of my being as I am. Nothing to find and bring into myself, nothing to capture and get rid of from myself. Just change your way of looking at things as they are and listen to the side of you which is supresses by your linear mind. Give it a read and open up your mind and may be it will hit you out of the ballpark too. If not, you haven't lost much, you will be still intact and whole as you are.
My unbound gratitude to J Jennifer Matthews, the author. I hope, many more people come to know of this little book priced so low by the author to make it affordable. Thank you for this little diamond of immense value and worth. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I re-read the book since I downloaded it. Now I have lost self and mind too! It is amazing to lose everthing and get it all at the same time!

Radically Condensed Instructions is the kind of book that can save you a lot of time and wheel-spinning. In what can sometimes seem to be a maze of nondual/spiritual literature, Ms. Matthews speaks from a well-read, broad-based background on the subject. Basically she is offering readers the benefit of her experience. It's as if she's a seasoned tour-guide to the city of nonduality, pointing out what's of value to see, and where some deadends are. Most importantly, she points out that shortest of shortcuts--helping the reader to clearly see that they don't have to get to where they already are! It's like your tour guide telling you, "Wake up--there's really no tour going on! This whole 'seeing trip' has been only a dream!"

While clarity and brevity are the book's main benefits, enjoyably it is also clever and humorous in spots. There is frequent (and skillful) use of illustrations, which always help in making potentially difficult points more accessible. And the overall topic is broken down into sections or "Ideas" which help the reader more easily get a handle or "overview." By the end of the book you've gone through rather deep water--but thanks to the author's clear, calm guidance and ability to simplify, it felt like you were in the kiddie pool most of the time. Lots to ponder and enjoy here. And in case you already have read a lot of nondual or spiritual literature, this one will keep you that much more firmly "grounded" in clarity.

Thank you for this STUNNING little book of poetic prose. Slowly reading these words is a penetrating meditation that carries over into every-day's "ordinary reality" (as if there were such a thing).

The beautifully simple way in which you express these concepts makes reading this a pure delight. I find myself re-reading the same sentences over and over, enjoying them more and 'seeing' IT more clearly each time.

I.e.:

"The fact that we feel disturbed or bothered [...] demonstrates the presence of a pre-existing, peaceful poignancy."

"You do not need to 'pursue' experience. You 'are' experience."

"Awareness is certainly not bothered because a self has been posited which chooses to bother itself." [HAHAHA]

Thanks again,
F. William

I was brought to this book by my friend and teacher, Joan Tollifson, and I am very grateful that this happened. I downloaded it and bought the paper copy as well. This little book is clear, challenging, and good-humored. At one point Ms. Matthews writes, "I'm going to introduce (some) ideas. I've numbered them so you know I mean business." I was brought "out" and felt little bubbles of joy as I took that in. That was the verbal correlate of my Zen teacher's kyosaku! As I read, I felt that the author was sitting alongside me, very aware of all the pitfalls and also very aware that there are no pitfalls unless "I" create them. Definitely a highly recommended book.
