Free radicals as agents of oxidative stress - lessons from nearly 2 decades ago,
By Kofi D (Coleraine, NI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Free Radicals in Tropical Diseases (Hardcover)
Free Radicals in Tropical Medicine (FRTM), published by Harwood Academic Publishers (London), is yet another understated masterpiece from the "Chinua Achebe" of biomedical Sciences. The book exemplifies Okezie's usual joint-up thinking on the subject of oxidative stress, caused in the main, by free radicals. The 12 chapters (counting the preface) in FRTM are written by 10-big hitters in the field, in addition to Okezie himself who contributes the book overview, and two chapters covering experimental methods (chapter 11) and the role of free radicals in nutrition (chapter 9). At the risk of repetition, FRTM is an excellent book overall no matter that it was first published 18 years ago. A particular highlight for me, is chapter 6 dealing with herbal agents that work by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS)at their sight of action, e.g. quinghauso - for all intents and purposes -artimisinin. Though intended for a specialized audience originally, FRTM may also appeal to a more highly educated general public of our times. The book is a classic and worth reading if you can get your hands on a copy.
