This is a workable, but not outstanding way to record phone calls. It only works with a corded phone. You plug the handset cord into the recorder dock, then plug the dock into the phone. It runs on either 2 AAA batteries or via a 5v adapter that plugs into the dock. The adapter is NOT included.

While it’s simple and easy to install, it’s not so simple to actually use. The screen is small and hard to read, and the buttons are tiny. Navigating (or even seeing) the on screen menus is tough.

You can pick from different recording options including recording speed (long play, regular and high quality), auto record or manual record. Some of the options are easy to select, such as record speed. Others, such as the timer function (e.g., setting it to record at a specific time) are cumbersome to set up.

The voice quality when recording on the dock in HQ mode is decent. Nothing spectacular, but workable. The device will store 2 hours on HQ mode, 5.5 hours in SP mode and 14 hours in LP mode. You can organize files into folders, delete files and protect files from the device itself without having to connect to a PC.

You can also use this as a regular digital recorder by detaching it from the dock. It has an internal mic that has limited pickup capabilities. It’s very unimpressive when used as a regular digital recorder – there are far better choices out there.

Playback can be via the device itself, with pause, FF and reverse functionality. You can also transfer the file to a PC using the USB connector on the dock. It includes software that must be used to transfer files. That’s the weakest part of the package by far – the software looks and works like it was programmed 20 years ago.

The recorder works fine once you get the settings right, but when it comes time to download the audio to a computer your PC won't recognize the voice recorder as a usb device so there is no click and drag option. You need to use the included 43-127 File Manager Software. This RadioShack-branded software is old and buggy (version 1.10) and loses connectivity with the recorder all the time. The GUI layout looks like something from windows95, literally, and the way things are spelled out is ridiculous. For example if you plug in the device and click on "connect recorder" a popup will come back with the message "connect recorder" which is supposed to be a confirmation the the recorder has been connected. The files are in the .dr3 (MX32) format so once you have your files downloaded (if you're lucky enough that it doesn't time out on you), then you have to use the same software to convert those files to .wav to be able to use them anywhere else. There is no file check when overwriting a file. It will delete what was in the folder with a newer version. Say you have a conversation recoded and saved with the default name f01_01.dr3, unless you rename it, when you transfer another call with the same name, it will overwrite without asking so you will lose the older conversation.

Verified Purchase
I ordered this telephone recording system for use at home.
The delivery was 9 days earlier than posted.
Great delivery speed from the seller.
Once installed and setup the operation was flawless.
Point to remember, proper setup as to settings and sensitivity will insure the proper operation.
Nothing complicated, just read and follow the directions and try it out.
Another great feature is the recorder can operate "stand-alone", that is it is entirely portable and will operate great without the base unit.
When in portable use the recorder has a crisp and clear sound and can operate in VOX or voice triggered mode which makes it great to capture (validate) longer converations.
I own a more expensive digital recorder and "apples to oranges" this unit definitely hold its own weight.
