Pretty much useless,
This review is from: Radio Dispatcher (Career Examination Passbooks) (Plastic Comb)
This book was of little help in preparing me for the exam I took. It's basically broken into five sections:
1) Radio (frequencies and the like) 6 practice exams worth, none of which appeared on the exam itself. 2) Map Reading. This did appear on the exam and the book does a good job in preparing you for this section of it..however, it made up a very small part of the book with only 1 practice exam. 3) Reading Comprehension. The book delt with scenerios that a dispatcher would encounter, however, on the exam, the questions had nothing to do with the job of Radio Dispatcher and were more general and of the "the paragraph above is best described by the following statement" type. This book (and it's five practice exams in this section) does nothing to help you prepare for these. 4) Name and Number Checking. This section did help with my preperation in showing me somewhat what they would be looking for on the actual exam. However, there are only two practice exams that go with this part. The other half of the book concerned itself with the basics of radio (again useless and not on the exam) and police communication (which showed up on one question that I can recall). Based on my exam experience, I cannot recommend this book. Back in the late 80's & 90's, these passbooks were nothing short of great, with great insight and full of useful info on and about the exams themselves. Recently, I've bought them for this one, engineering tech and a computer exam and none of them were very insightful or helpful. At damn near $40.00 a pop, one cannot afford to be throwing away cash on books full of useless information. So do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for help as I plan to for future exams.
